Pressure is the force applied per unit area wherein a force is a push or a pull on an object and area refers to how much space a two-dimensional surface or shape occupies. The force results in the change in the initial state of motion or direction of the object.

Answer: According to Pascal, pressure is equal to force divided by the area on which it acts.

The pressure is equal to force divided by area is represented as P = F/A. Here the pressure is directly proportional to force and is inversely proportional to the area. When the area is constant, on increasing the magnitude of the force applied the pressure also increases. On the other hand, when the force is constant, pressure increases as the area decreases.

Difference between Absolute Pressure and Gauge Pressure

Following are the difference between Absolute Pressure and Gauge Pressure:

Gauge Pressure

  • It is the pressure measured relative to atmospheric pressure.

  • It is positive for pressures above atmospheric pressure.

  • It is zero at atmospheric pressure

  • It is negative for pressures below atmospheric pressure.

Atmospheric Pressure

  • It is the measure of the pressure relative to a complete vacuum.

  • It is positive for all pressures above a complete vacuum

  • It is zero for a complete vacuum.

  • It is never negative.

Summary:

Who gave the theory ‘the pressure is equal to force divided by area on which it acts’?

According to Pascal’s Law, the pressure is equal to force divided by area on which it acts.
