Places A and B are 100km apart on a highway. One car starts from A and another from B at the same time. If the cars travel in the same direction at different speeds, they meet in 5 hours. If they travel towards each other, they meet in 1 hour. What are the speeds of the two cars?

Consider the speed of the first car at A as x kmph
Speed of the second car at B as y kmph
Relative speed when cars travel in the same direction S = x – y
Distance D = 100 km
Time t = 5 hours
We know that
Speed = Distance/Time
Distance D = S x T
Substituting the values
100 = (x – y) x 5
x – y = 20 …. (1)
Relative speed when cars travel in opposite direction S = x + y
Distance D = 100 km
Time t = 1 hour
Distance D = S x T
Substituting the values
100 = (x + y) x 1
x + y = 100 ….. (2)
By adding (1) and (2)
x – y + x + y = 120
2x = 120
x = 60km/h
Substituting the value of x in equation (1)
60 – y = 20
y = 60 – 20 = 40 km/h
Therefore, the speed of the car at A is 60 km/h and the speed of car at B is 40 km/h.
Summary:
Places A and B are 100km apart on a highway. One car starts from A and another from B at the same time. If the cars travel in the same direction at different speeds, they meet in 5 hours. If they travel towards each other, they meet in 1 hour. What are the speeds of the two cars?
