India Global week 2020

Context

Prime Minister addressed the inaugural session of India Global week

India Global Week

  • It is a three - day virtual conference themed ‘Be The Revival : India and a Better New World’
  • More than 5000 global participants from 30 nations will take part in it.

HIghlights

  • The PM laid emphasis on India’s leading role in the global revival.
  • India’s concept of revival is based on: Revival with care, Revival with compassion, Revival which is sustainable - both for the environment and the economy.
  • The Prime Minister listed the gains made during the last six years such as: financial inclusion, record housing and infra construction, Ease of Doing Business, bold tax reforms including the GST.
  • He described India as a land of many possibilities and opportunities.
  • The idea of Atma Nirbhar Bharat was again stressed with focus on being self-sustaining and self-generating.
  • Today, India is ‘reforming,performing and transforming’ with new economic opportunities and human-centric and inclusive approach to development.

Mongolian Kanjur Manuscripts

Context

The Ministry of Culture has taken up the project of reprinting of 108 volumes of Mongolian Kanjur under the National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM)

Highlights and Background

  • The first set of five volumes of Mongolian Kanjur were published under the NMM.
  • It is expected that all the 108 volumes of the Mongolian Kanjur will be published by March, 2022.
  • During the socialist period, xylographs were consigned to flames and monasteries were bereft of their sacred scriptures.
  • During 1956-58, Professor Raghu Vira obtained a microfilm copy of the rare Kanjur manuscripts and brought them to India.
  • The Mongolian Kanjur in 108 volumes was published in India in 1970s by Prof. Lokesh Chandra.
  • Now, the present edition is being published by the National Mission for Manuscripts,in which every volume will have a list of contents indicating the original title of the sutra in Mongolian.

National Mission for Manuscripts

  • The National Mission for Manuscripts was launched in February 2003 by the Government of India, under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.
  • The mandate of the mission is documenting, conserving and disseminating the knowledge preserved in the manuscripts. 
  • One of the objectives of the mission is to publish rare and unpublished manuscripts so that the knowledge enshrined in them is spread to researchers, scholars and the general public at large.
  • Under this scheme,reprinting of 108 volumes of Mongolian Kanjur has been taken up by the Mission. 

Mongolian Kanjur

  • Mongolian Kanjur, the Buddhist canonical text in 108 volumes is considered to be the most important religious text in Mongolia. 
  • In the Mongolian language ‘Kanjur’ means ‘Concise Orders’- the words of Lord Buddha in particular.
  • It is held in high esteem by the Mongolian Buddhists and they worship the Kanjur at temples and recite the lines of Kanjur in daily life as a sacred ritual. 
  • The Kanjur are kept in almost every monastery in Mongolia.
  • Mongolian Kanjur has been translated from Tibetan.The language of the Kanjur is Classical Mongolian.
  • The Mongolian Kanjur is a source of providing a cultural identity to Mongolia.

India - Mongolia Relations

  • Historical interaction between India and Mongolia goes back centuries.
  • Buddhism was carried to Mongolia by Indian cultural and religious ambassadors during the early Christian era. 
  • As a result, today, Buddhists form the single largest religious denomination in Mongolia. 
  • India established formal diplomatic relations with Mongolia in 1955. Since then, the overwhelming relationship between both the countries has now reached a new height.
  • The publication of Mongolian Kanjur by the Government of India for the Government of Mongolia will act as a symbol of cultural symphony between India and Mongolia and will contribute to furtherance of bilateral relations during the coming years.

Central Pollution Control Board

Context

CPCB to strengthen the pollution monitoring system in Ganga and its major tributaries

Details

  • The inspection of Grossly Polluting Industries will be carried out on a regular basis.
  • A suitable mechanism will be developed for close monitoring of water quality in coordination with National Mission for Clean Ganga.
  • The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has also approved a special programme for conservation of Gangetic Dolphin, on the lines of Project Tiger and Project Elephant.

Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)

  • It is a statutory organisation under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
  • It was established in 1974 under the Water (Prevention and Control of pollution) Act, 1974.
  • The CPCB is also entrusted with the powers and functions under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981
  • It serves as a field formation and also provides technical services to the Ministry of Environment and Forest under the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986
  • It advises the Central Government on any matter concerning prevention and control of water and air pollution and improvement of the quality of air.
  • CPCB plans and cause to be executed a nation-wide program for the prevention, control or abatement of water and air pollution.
  • It also provides technical assistance and guidance to the State Boards and coordinate their activities.
