Half Wave Rectifier

One-half of each a.c. input cycle is rectified in a half-wave rectifier. The p-n junction diode has low resistance when it is forward biassed and high resistance when it is reverse biassed. When the input voltage is provided, the diode is forward biassed for one-half of a cycle, and in the other half, it is reverse biassed. The ideal outcome can be attained during alternate half-cycles.

Disadvantages of Half Wave Rectifier:

  • Increased ripple production
  • There are harmonics created.
  • The transformer is not used very often.
  • The effectiveness of correction is poor.

As a result, in a bridge rectifier, the PIV of a conducting and a non-conducting diode is V, or the peak value of the a.c. input.
