The Deccan Plateau is extended to eight Indian states. The plateau was formed due to the breaking and drifting of the Gondwana land. It is composed of igneous, old crystalline, and metamorphic rocks. It has shallow and broad valleys and rounded hills. Deccan Plateau is spread mostly across the states located in the southern part of India. There are two broad divisions of the plateau namely the Central Highlands and the Deccan Plateau.

How many states are within India Deccan Plateau?

Deccan Plateau is bounded by the eastern and western Ghats. It is quite large in size and is an important ecological site due to the various types of habitats present there. It covers the entire southern peninsular region of India. It covers many Indian states as well such as Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

There are three principal rivers surrounding the Deccan Plateau in India. These rivers are the Krishna, the Godavari, and Kaveri which flow from the Western Ghats eastward to the Bay of Bengal. The Southern gateway of the Deccan plateau is Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu.

Deccan Plateau was formed after volcanic activities that happened over millions of years. Following are a few important points with respect to the Deccan Plateau:

Most of the rivers of this plateau flow south.
The Godavari river and its tributaries drain the northern part of the plateau.
The Tungabhadra river, Krishna river, and its tributaries drain the central plateau.
The Kaveri river drains the southernmost part of the plateau.
