The gravitational force depends on the product of the distance between two particles and their masses. The force of attraction between any two bodies is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them and directly proportional to the product of their masses.

Newton's Law of Gravitation

  1. In the universe, every particle is drawn to every other particle by a force whose strength is directly proportional to the product of their masses.
  2. Additionally, the force is inversely correlated to the square of the separation between their centers.
  3. Mathematically, F ∝ m1m2/ r2, where F = force, m1, m2 = masses of two different particles, r = distance between them or F = Gm1m2/ r2, where G = Gravitational constant and its value is equal to 6.67 x 10-11 m3s-2kg-1
  4. The masses of the particles have a direct impact on the gravitational field. Increased force results from the increased mass.
  5. The square of the distance between the particles determines how much gravitational force there is. The force will diminish as distance increases.
