The retardation produced and the time taken by the car to stop is 1m/s² and 10 sec. Steps to calculate the retardation produced and the time taken by the car to stop:
Given that:
Initial velocity = u = 36km/h
Now by converting them we get:
u = 36x(5/18)=10m/s
Also given that:
Final velocity = V = 0 m/s
We have to calculate acceleration, a, and time t.
Distance traveled = S
S = 55 – 5 = 50m
We have the third equation of motion,
V² – U² = 2as
Substituting the values in the above equation we get
⇒0²-(10)² = 2*a*50
a= -100/100
In simplification we get the:
a= -1m/s².
We know that,
V = U + at
Substituting the values in the above equation we get:
0 = 10 – 1 x t
-10 = -1 x t
In simplification we get the:
t = 10sec
Hence, acceleration is -1m/s² or retardation =1m/s²
Therefore time is taken by the car to stop = 10sec.
Velocity
- The pace at which an object’s position changes in relation to time and a frame of reference is known as its velocity.
- Velocity is nothing more than the act of moving quickly in one direction, despite its complex appearance.
- Because velocity is a vector quantity, the definition requires both magnitude (speed) and direction.
- The SI equivalent is the metre per second (ms-1).
- It is said that a body is accelerating if its velocity changes in either direction or magnitude.
Summary:
On turning a corner a car driver driving at 36 km per hour find the side on the road 55m ahead he immediately applies brakes so as to stop within 5 M of the child and calculates the retardation produced and the time taken by the car to stop.
