What is the National Register of Citizens (NRC)?

A National Register of Citizens (NRC) was only ever created in 1951 following the completion of the Census of that year. The NRC was created by compiling information on every person counted during that Census. But the 2003 Citizenship Rules require that the All India NRC be announced.

NRC In Assam:

  • The names of those people (or their descendants) whose names exist in the NRC, 1951, will now be updated.
  • Or on any of the electoral rolls up until the 24th of March 1971 at midnight.
