NDA Physical Standards: Height, Weight, Vision, Tattoo Policy

NDA Physical Standards

The minimum height required for NDA is 157 cm (Male) & 152 cm (Female) candidates & 163 cm for flying branches. So, the minimum height for the Indian army in feet is 5.15 feet (Male) & 4.98 feet (Female). The minimum NDA height requirement in feet for Gorkhas and people from the hills of India’s north-eastern regions, such as Garhwal and Kumaon, would be 5 cm. less.

The minimum height required for NDA in feet for candidates from Lakshadweep can be reduced by 2 cm. Here in this article, Know the NDA height weight chart required for the Indian army.

NDA Height Weight Chart

If an applicant is not physically and medically fit, he or she will not be chosen for the NDA Exam. The following is the NDA height weight chart for male and female candidates:

The NDA height in feet requirement varies as per the stream of entry. NDA weight chart should be proportionate to height as per the chart given below:

To pass the physical and medical examinations, candidates should not only prepare hard for the exams but also keep themselves physically and mentally fit through physical exercises. The height required for NDA in feet for female candidates is as follows:

Note: Candidates who want to be pilots must meet the following criteria:

  • Leg length should be at least 99 cm and no more than 120 cm.
  • Thigh Length: 64 cm maximum
  • The minimum and maximum sitting heights are 81.50 cm and 96 cm, respectively.

NDA Chest Dimensions

It’s important to have a well-developed chest as per the NDA physical standard. The chest should not be smaller than 81 cm when fully expanded. After maximum inspiration, the minimum range of expansion should be 5 cm.

NDA Visual Eye Standard

The following are the NDA visual eye standard to join Indian Army:

Candidates can also fix minor flaws/ailments to expedite the completion of the medical test at the Military Hospital after being recommended at the SSB. The following are a few of the more common defects/ailments:

  • Wax (Ears)
  • Deviated Nasal Septum
  • Phimosis or Hydrocele
  • Overweight or Underweight 
  • Under Sized Chest
  • Piles
  • Gynaecomastia 
  • Tonsillitis 
  • Varicocele 

NDA Tattoo Policies

Candidates must ensure that any permanent body tattoos are only visible on the inner side of their forearm. The following are the NDA tattoo policies: 

  • Tattoos on the inside of the elbow to the wrist, as well as the reverse side of the palm/back (dorsal) side of the hand, are not permitted by UPSC.
  • Tattoos on any other part of the body that are permanent are also not permitted.
  • If an applicant comes from a tribe where tattoos are common, approval will be given based on the customs involved.

NDA Spinal Conditions

Candidates must not be infected with any of the diseases mentioned below:

  • Granulomatous disease of the spine
  • Arthritis or spondylosis (Rheumatoid arthritis & allied disorders or Ankylosing spondylitis or Osteoarthrosis, spondylosis and degenerative joint disease or Non-articular rheumatism (e.g. lesions of the rotator cuff, recurrent lumbago, tennis elbow, etc.) and Miscellaneous disorders including SLE, polymyositis, vasculitis
  • Spondylolisthesis or spondylolysis
  • Compression fracture of vertebrae
  • SC Heuerman’s disease (i.e. Adolescent kyphosis)
  • Loss of cervical lordosis when associated with the clinically restricted movements of the cervical spine
  • Unilateral or Bilateral cervical ribs with the demon stable neurological or circulatory deficit
  • Scoliosis more than 15 Degree as measured by Cobb’s method
  • Degenerative Disc. disease
  • Presence of Schmorl’s nodes at more than one level
  • Atlanto-occipital & atlantoaxial anomalies
  • Hemivertebrae and/or partial block (fused) vertebrae at either stage of the cervical, dorsal, or lumbar spine, as well as full block (fused) vertebrae at several levels of the cervical or dorsal spine
  • Unilateral Sacralisation or lumbarisation (i.e. Complete or incomplete) at all the levels and bilateral incomplete sacralization/lumbarisation
  • Any other abnormality if so considered by the specialist

NDA X-Ray Examination

Candidates will be disqualified if they meet any of the following criteria:

  • Granulomatous disease of the spine.
  • Arthritis or spondylosis
  • Scoliosis more than 15 Degree as measured by Cobb’s Method (10 Degree for Army and Navy).
  • More than mild Kyphosis/Lordosis
  • Spondylolisthesis or Spondylosis or Spondylolysis
  • Herniated nucleus purposes
  • Compression fracture of Vertebra
  • Sacralisation Disease
  • Cervical ribs with the demonstrable neurological or Circulatory deficit
  • Presence of Schmorl’s node at more than one level
  • Atlanto-occipital & atlanto-axial anomalies
  • Incomplete Sacralisation Unilateral/Bilateral
  • Spina Bifida other than SV 1 & LV 5 if completely Sacralised
  • Any other abnormality, if so considered by the specialist

Other Medical Conditions for NDA Physical Standard

There should be no signs of a fragile constitution or physical defects. A well-developed chest is required of candidates. The other medical conditions for NDA are as follows:

  • The bones and joints should be in good working order.
  • There is no history of medical problems or fits.
  • Candidates must be able to hear normally.
  • There is no speech impediment.
  • Blood pressure is normal, and there are no symptoms of heart disease or blood vessel disease.
  • There is no enlargement of the liver or spleen.
  • There are no anomalies in the urine.
  • There are no skin disorders.
  • The USG abdomen test revealed no anomalies.
  • A sufficient number of healthy, natural teeth
  • Candidates for the Air Force must have a routine ECG that is within normal limits.

NDA Age Limit 2023

The age limit for the NDA examination set by UPSC are as follows:

Age Requirement:

  • Minimum Age: Candidates must be at least 16 years old.
  • Maximum Age: Candidates must be below 19 years of age.

Date Range: Candidates must have been born between 02nd July 2004 and 1st July 2007.

Date of Birth: The date of birth provided in the application form must match the date of birth mentioned in the matriculation or secondary school leaving certificate.

Marital Status: Only unmarried candidates are eligible to apply for the NDA examination.

Age Range During Course Commencement:

  • Minimum Age During Course Commencement: 15.7-16 years
  • Maximum Age During Course Commencement: 18.7-19 years

NDA 2023 Education Qualification: To be eligible for the NDA examination, candidates are required to meet the educational qualifications specified by UPSC. Before applying for NDA, please review the following educational criteria provided in the table:

Army Wing: Educational Qualification: Must have passed the 12th class examination from a recognized board or university.

Air Force and Naval Wings: Educational Qualification: Must have passed the 12th class examination from a recognized board or university with Physics and Mathematics as subjects.

10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy: Educational Qualification: Must have passed the 12th class examination from a recognized board or university with Physics and Mathematics as subjects. Candidates must ensure that they fulfill these educational requirements according to the specific wings they wish to apply for within the NDA.
