The 10 metals are lithium, magnesium, aluminum, titanium, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, and silver and the 10 nonmetals are hydrogen, helium, iodine, argon, oxygen, neon, nitrogen, carbon, sulphur and bromine. A class of materials known as metals is distinguished by their high light reflectance, malleability, ductility, and great thermal and electrical conductivity.

  • Under the Earth’s surface, there are naturally occurring substances called metals.
  • Most metals have a glossy or shiny finish.
  • Because they are inorganic, metals are made of nonliving substances.

Physical Properties of Metals

  • sturdiness and high tensile strength
  • Except for mercury, which is a liquid at room temperature, these materials are solid at room temperature, sonorous, good conductors of heat and electricity, and malleable (able to be pounded into thin sheets).
  • High melting and boiling points (excluding Cesium (Cs) and Gallium (Ga)) Ductile, i.e., can be drawn into thin wires Dense (except alkali metals). Osmium has the highest density whereas lithium has the lowest. Both are lustrous and silver-grey in colour (except gold and copper)

Examples of Metals

  1. Lithium
  2. Magnesium
  3. Aluminum
  4. Titanium
  5. Iron
  6. Cobalt
  7. Nickel
  8. Copper
  9. Zinc
  10. Silver

Non-metals

  • All metallic characteristics are absent from non-metals.
  • They function well as electrical and thermal insulators.
  • Usually gases, but occasionally liquids, they are.
  • Elements that generate negative ions by absorbing or acquiring electrons are known as non-metals.
  • Four, five, six, or seven electrons are frequently found in the outermost shell of nonmetals.

Physical Properties of Non-metals

  • occur at normal temperatures as solids, liquids, and gases.
  • Brittle
  • Non-malleable
  • Non-ductile
  • Non-sonorous
  • ineffective heat and electricity conductors

Examples of non-metals

  1. Hydrogen
  2. Helium
  3. Iodine
  4. Argon
  5. Oxygen
  6. Neon
  7. Nitrogen
  8. Carbon
  9. Sulphur
  10. Bromine

Summary:

Name any 10 metals and any 10 nonmetals.

The 10 non-metals are hydrogen, helium, iodine, argon, oxygen, neon, nitrogen, carbon, sulphur, and bromine, while the 10 metals are lithium, magnesium, aluminium, titanium, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, and silver.
