Women pilots are already being recruited and trained by Indian Air Force. Here are five heroic women from the Indian Armed Forces who are now role models for future generations of girls.
Punita Arora
She is the first Indian woman to hold the position of Lieutenant-General of the Indian Armed Forces, the army's second-highest rank. Punita Arora was born into a Punjabi family that relocated to Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, during the partition. She has also held the rank of Vice-Admiral in the Indian Navy. She was the first woman to serve as the commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College in 2004, before rising to such high status.
Padmavathy Bandopadhyay
Padmavathy decided to enter the Indian Air Force in 1968 and rose through the ranks to become the IAF's first female Air Marshal. In 1978, she became the first female officer to graduate from the Defence Service Staff College. She is the first woman to undertake scientific study in the North Pole, as well as the first lady officer to serve as an aviation medical specialist. Mitali Madhumita
Sena medal is awarded to soldiers for valour and excellent bravery. In February 2011, Lt. Col. Mitali Madhumita became the first female officer to get the medal for her bravery during operations in the northeast and Jammu & Kashmir. When suicide bombers struck Kabul in February 2010, the army's English Language Training Team, led by Madhumita, was among the first to arrive at the Indian embassy. Mathumita personally rescued 19 officers who were nearly buried beneath the rubble and transported them to the hospital.
Priya Jhingan
On September 21, 1992, she became the first lady cadet to join the Indian Army. Priya Jhingan, a law graduate, wrote to the Chief of the Army, demanding that women be allowed to join the army. Her wish was granted a year later, along with the recruitment of 24 fresh female candidates.
Divya Ajith Jumar
Divya Ajith Jumar made a splash when she won the competition at the age of 21 by topping 244 fellow cadets, both men, and women. She defeated all of her competitors to win the Best All-Round Cadet Award as well as the “Sword of Honour.” Swimming tests, P.T. tests, service subjects, field training, drill tests, obstacle training, and cross-country enclosures are all part of the test. She is the first recipient of the prestigious honour.
