Mining Engineering & Metallurgy: Scope, Career & Colleges

By Avinash Kumar|Updated : May 18th, 2019

Mining Engineering is perhaps the least favourite stream of engineering and most of the students go for it may be due to lack of a better option. Even then, in our endeavour to understand all the core streams of engineering, let's find out what goes on in this least chosen and grossly misunderstood in terms of scope, field.

Mining & Metallurgy Course

Mining and Metallurgy is a very focused field which deals with extraction and processing of minerals from their natural source and processing it so that it can be used in other areas. Considering the fact that every material that we use ultimately is derived from one or the other mineral directly or indirectly, this field has major applications and scope. The additional area which has growing importance is reclamation and recycling due to minerals being exhaustible sources or raw materials.

Mining engineering is also associated with other fields such as Geology, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering. These branches share many common concepts and elements.

Some of the courses and areas of study are:

  • Minerals Processing
  • Ore Reserve Analysis
  • Rock Mechanics
  • Mine Planning
  • Ventilation
  • Industrial Management
  • Materials Handling
  • Drilling and Blasting
  • Design of Engineering Structures
  • Environmental aspects of mining
  • Mine Health and Safety

Job Profile & Future Scope of Mining and Metallurgy

This job usually requires travel, exploration and a lot of outdoor site-work. Depending upon the location and profile, a mining engineer will have to brave various obstacles in the form of- extreme climatic conditions, dangerous work conditions, environmental pollution etc. Just think of the movie "Armageddon" starring Bruce-Willis and you'll get the basic idea.

The on-site office can be set up on the surface or under the surface of the earth (inside the mine), depending upon the style of the operation/project. However, not all mining engineers work outdoors. There are mining engineers involved in mineral processing units. Such engineers get to work under relatively relaxed and comfortable working conditions. Research Engineers usually work at research units or labs.

Some of the common job profiles available in front of mining engineers include-

  • Plant Supervisor
  • Mine Supervisor
  • Plant Manager
  • Assistant Mining Engineer
  • Chief Mining Engineer

The job can be in the government or private sector both of which pay handsomely well depending on your educational qualifications. You can also go for an MBA to get managerial jobs in the field and accelerate your career path. Comparatively, the academics part of this field is very easy and therefore you are going to have enough time to prepare for other exams like Civil services (IES, IAS etc) or MBA or go for higher studies in the field. Considering very few people opt for this, you can really do well with comparatively less competition. There is, of course, no limit.

Now, for all those who don't find it fancy enough, we are already exploring other planets and moons. Is it really far-fetched that we might start exploring their surfaces and mining them for commercial applications? Being an astronaut is therefore not impossible with a mining degree (if Matt daemon with botany can be a martian, you can be more!!)
