Whenever a machine rotates, it produces unbalanced forces as a result of rotating masses. To eliminate or reduce these unbalanced forces, the process of balancing is used in the operating and designing of machines. Balancing is an essential topic in the syllabus of many engineering competitive examinations like the GATE ME.

Generally, many numerical and theoretical questions are asked from the subtopics and formulae related to balancing. This article will tell you where to go for balancing study material for GATE ME, balancing GATE questions and answers pdf with solutions, balancing online quizzes and online tests. It will provide a comprehensive overview of the topic to prepare for the GATE ME.

Important Balancing Topics for GATE ME

Topics

Explanation

Unbalanced forces due to masses rotating in the same plane

When several masses are rotating in the same plane, then an unbalanced force results in increased pressure on the bearings and more vibrations in the machine. This unbalanced force can be eliminated or reduced using:

  • Internal balancing
  • External balancing

Internal balancing

Internal balancing is a method of eliminating unbalanced forces using single mass rotation in the single plane. Mathematically, internal balancing is represented by mr = mbrb.

External balancing

External balancing is a method of eliminating or reducing unbalanced forces using two masses rotation in two different planes parallel to the plane of unbalanced forces. In the case of external balancing, two different masses, mb1 and mb2, are placed in two different planes to satisfy two conditions:

  • Static balancing
  • Dynamic balancing

Static balancing

When the resultant force on the shafts is equal to 0, such that all 3 dynamic forces are similar, then the condition of static balancing is satisfied.

Dynamic balancing

When the sum of the resultant movements due to dynamic forces is 0, then the condition of dynamic balancing is satisfied. In other words, when the dynamic forces have 0 resultant movements, it is referred to as dynamic balancing.

Partial balancing

It is a process used to reduce the effect of unbalanced forces in machines. Generally, ⅔rd of the unbalanced forces in the machines are balanced using this method. The mathematical formula to show the balanced force using partial balancing is cmrω2cosθ.
