Opportunities of Getting a PSU Job Through GATE

Public Sector Undertakings are government-owned enterprises in India or public sector enterprises. There will be a massive competition among candidates applying for a job at a PSU as they will be eligible to avail the various benefits offered by a PSU job if they get selected for through GATE, such as: 

• Job Security: Employees in PSU jobs get incomparable job security. They are rarely fired based on their performance, whereas sackings based on performance are common in the private sector.
• Medical Insurance Benefits: Employees in PSU jobs enjoy decent medical benefits and reimbursements for themselves and their families.
• Retirement Life Benefits: Employees in PSU jobs get to enjoy decent post-retirement reimbursements like a pension fund, gratuity, and salary arrears, making their retirement life pressure-free.     
• Well-paid Salary Packages: Most of the PSU employees earn a decent salary compared to private sector employees.       
• Perks and Bonuses: PSU employees enjoy a decent number of perks and bonuses depending upon the nature of their job.
• Fixed working hours: PSU employees have set working hours through which they will be able to maintain an excellent work-life balance.

Categories of PSUs in India

There are three categories of PSUs in India, divided based on investment policies and other characteristics. The classification of PSUs is:

Navratnas: The Navratna PSUs are publicly listed under the Securities and Exchange Board of India. These PSUs have internationally and nationally. The turnover of Navratnas PSUs ranges approximately around 2,000 crores to 1 lakh crore INR. Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Power Grid Corporation of India, are few examples of Navratnas PSUs.

Maharatnas: The Maharatna PSUs are listed under Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs). When compared to Navratna PSUs, Maharatna PSUs will have a medium turnover. Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Indian Oil Corporation, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation are few examples of Maharatna PSUs.

Miniratnas: The Miniratna PSUs have less turnover when compared to Navratna PSUs and Maharatna PSUs. These are further classified into Miniratna Category-I PSUs and Miniratna Category-II PSUs. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, Airports Authority of India, Mineral Exploration Corporation Ltd. are few examples of Miniratna PSUs.

List of PSUs for Civil Engineering Recruitment

Below is the list of PSUs in India that recruit Civil Engineers based on the GATE score:

1.  Airports Authority of India (AAI)

Eligibility Description: The candidate must have graduated bachelor's degree in Civil/Electrical/Electronics/Architecture with specialisation in Electronics/Telecommunications engineering from a recognised or deemed university.

Percentage Criteria: 

• General – 60%
• Other Backward Classes (OBC) – 60%
• Scheduled Castes (S.C.) – 60%
• Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) – 60%
• Persons With Disability (PWD) – 60%

Age Limit: The candidate's maximum age must be 27 years as of January 31, 2021.

 2.  Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL)

Eligibility Description: The candidate must have graduated bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Mechanical & Production, Chemical, Petrochemical, Petroleum Refining & Petrochemical, Petroleum Refining, Civil engineering from a recognised or deemed university.

Percentage Criteria: 

• General – 60%
• Other Backward Classes (OBC) - 60%
• Scheduled Castes (S.C.) – 50%
• Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) – 50%
• Persons With Disability (PWD) – 50%

Age Limit: The candidate's maximum age must be 25 years as of January 31, 2021.

3.  Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL)

Eligibility Description: The candidate must have graduated with a BTech/BE in Civil or a related engineering course from a recognised or deemed university.

Percentage Criteria: 

• General – 65%
• Other Backward Classes (OBC) – 65%
• Scheduled Castes (S.C.) – 55%
• Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) – 55%
• Persons With Disability (PWD) – 55%

Age Limit: The candidate's maximum age must be 26 years as of January 31, 2021.

4.  National Fertilizers Limited (NFL)

Eligibility Description: The candidate must have graduated with a bachelor's degree in Civil engineering from a recognised or deemed university.

Percentage Criteria: 

• General – 60%
• Other Backward Classes (OBC) – 60%
• Scheduled Castes (S.C.) – 50%
• Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) – 50%
• Persons With Disability (PWD) – 50%

Age Limit: The candidate's maximum age must be 27 years as of January 31, 2021.

5.  NLC India Limited (NLC)

Eligibility Description: The candidate must have graduated in Civil engineering or a relevant stream from a recognised or deemed university.

Percentage Criteria: 

• General – 60%
• Other Backward Classes (OBC) – 60%
• Scheduled Castes (S.C.) – 50%
• Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) – 50%
• Persons With Disability (PWD) – 50%

Age Limit: The candidate's maximum age must be 30 years as of January 31, 2021.

6.  Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL)

Eligibility Description: The candidate must have passed a Mechanical/ Electrical/ Instrumentation/ Chemical/ Electronics & Communication/ Civil Engineering/ Industrial and Fire Safety Engineering from a recognised or deemed university.

Percentage Criteria: 

• General – 60%
• Other Backward Classes (OBC) – 60%
• Scheduled Castes (S.C.) – 60%
• Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) – 60%
• Persons With Disability (PWD) – 60%

Age Limit: The candidate's maximum age must be 30 years as of January 31, 2021

7.  Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC)

Eligibility Description: The candidate must have graduated in Mechanical/ Petroleum/ Civil/ Electrical/ Electronics/ Telecom/ Physics/ Instrumentation/ Chemical/ Geology/ Chemistry/ Geophysics/ Computer/ IT engineering from a recognised or deemed university.

Percentage Criteria: 

• General – 60%
• Other Backward Classes (OBC) – 60%
• Scheduled Castes (S.C.) – 60%
• Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) – 60%
• Persons With Disability (PWD) – 60%

8.  Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL)

Eligibility Description: The candidate must have graduated in BE/BTech/BSc(Engg.)/Electrical, Electronics, Civil engineering from a recognised or deemed university.

Percentage Criteria: 

• General – 65%
• Other Backward Classes (OBC) – 65%
• Scheduled Castes (S.C.) – 65%
• Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) – 65%
• Persons With Disability (PWD) – 65%

9.  Tehri Hydro Development Corporation India Limited (THDC India Ltd)

Eligibility Description: The candidate must have graduated in Mechanical/ Electrical/ Civil engineering from a recognised or deemed university.

• General – 65%
• Other Backward Classes (OBC) – 65%
• Scheduled Castes (S.C.) – 65%
• Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) – 65%
• Persons With Disability (PWD) – 65%
