- SBI Clerk: A State Bank of India Clerk's basic income will range between Rs. 26,000 and Rs. 29,000 per month, including DA (Dearness allowance), HRA, and other benefits. The pay scale of the SBI Clerk is Rs.17900-1000/3-20900-1230/3-24590-1490/4-30550-1730/7-42600-3270/1-45930-1990/1-47920.
- IBPS Clerk: The basic pay of an IBPS Clerk is ₹19900/- per month, on the scale of ₹19900-1000/1-20900-1230/3-24590-1490/4-30550-1730/7-42600-3270/1-45930-1990/1-47920. Along with this, IBPS Clerks are also paid special pay and allowances.
- LIC Assistant: As per the notification, the salary of a LIC Assistant is ₹30,000/- per month. However, the basic pay is ₹14435 in the scale of ₹14435- 840 (1) 15275-915 (2) - 17105-1030 (5) - 22255-1195 (2) - 24645-1455(3)-29010-1510(2)- 32030-1610(5)-40080 and other allowances.
2. Job Profile:
The LIC, SBI & IBPS are entry-level positions that entail doing a variety of day-to-day responsibilities to ensure the organization's efficient operation. A) SBI Clerk Exam: Junior Associates or Clerks in SBI perform the following functions:
- Functions as a Single Window Operator (SWO): This involves performing the day-to-day bank functions like opening accounts, amount transfers through cheque/ NEFT/ RTGS, etc, issuance of Demand Drafts (DD), cheque clearance, cheque book requests, receiving inward emails, etc.

- The junior associate may also need to function as a special assistant or universal teller.

There are different types of the job profile of a bank clerk like Accounts Clerk, Data entry Clerk, Office Clerk, Loan clerk, etc. And, you will be shifted from lower to upper-level clerk post according to bank policies. An important role of the clerk in the bank is to handle many valuable tasks related to the customer’s accounts and to solve their complaints and issues.

- Attending government treasury work.

- A bank clerk also performs back-office tasks like collection of receipts, maintenance of ledger, balance tally, etc. He/She is responsible for sanctioning withdrawals, verifying cheques, issuing demand drafts (as per request), and other services to the customers.
- A bank clerk also holds the bank cash, bank keys, and other valuables in safe custody and others.
- The bank clerk is also responsible for marketing financial products of the bank such as deposits, loans, and schemes to visitors.
- With the digitization of the bank, these days the job profile of bank clerks is mostly related to working on the computer and entering the day-to-day transaction. Because of dealing with the customers, their job profile is also known as Single Window Operators.
C) LIC Assistant Exam: The person appointed as an assistant in LIC has to perform the following duties:
- Daily dealing with customer grievances.
- Processing and analyzing all the documents related to insurance and checking the authenticity of those documents.
- Handling documents related to policy claims, settlements, accounts, etc.
- Handling both online/offline transactions.
- Performing duties of clerical staff including cashier, single-window operator, customer service executive, etc.
- Handling cash counters, working on files given by the assistant manager.
- Assisting in back-office works.
3. Promotion & Growth Opportunities:
If you are planning to go with the SBI Clerk exam then the clerical cadre has growth potential with SBI Clerk. SBI Clerks may be promoted to the JMGS Scale-1 post. Employees at LIC are eligible for multiple advancement levels based on their experience as well as their performance.
A) SBI Clerk Exam: SBI offers considerable promotions and career growth opportunities for the Clerical Cadre. SBI clerks have the opportunity to be promoted to JMGS Scale-I.
- Promotions in the SBI may be in-cadre (on the clerical level itself) or to the officer cadre.
- For promotion to the officer cadre, the employees have to meet certain requirements, which vary as per the promotion cadre. For example, in case of promotion to Trainee Officers, the employees need to appear for a written exam and an interview after the 3 years of service.
- SBI clerks have better promotion opportunities as compared to the clerks of other banks.
- Because of the fast-track promotion process of SBI, employees may reach as high as the post of General Manager.
B) IBPS Clerk Exam: After becoming a bank clerk, you will get multiple chances to get promoted to a higher level. Most bank aspirants want to become officers. Thus, all the candidates who wish to get a promotion from clerk to officer need to apply for the promotion test and appeared for the examination as well. He/She needs to serve for at least 2 years to be eligible for promotion to the officer.
The promotions are conducted every 2 years and clerks have the opportunity to take part in it. There are two processes for Officer promotion that are applied to individual candidates depending on their performance and experience in the banking services.
(1) Normal process- Under the Normal process, the employee (bank clerk) has to qualify written exam, and based on his experience and seniority in the services of the bank, he can be selected as Officer. In this process, JAIIB and CAIIB diplomas are not compulsory. After clearing this exam, you will become a Trainee Officer (TO). Trainee Officers can later become Probationary Officers (PO).
(2) Merit basis process- In this process, the employee needs to serve for at least 2 years as a clerk with a JAIIB and CAIIB diploma conducted by the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance (IIBF) and must with a graduate/post-graduate degree.
After promoting to Probationary Officer (PO), there are seven scales in the officer cadre:
- Scale 1 – Officer / Assistant Manager
- Scale 2 – Manager
- Scale 3 – Senior Manager
- Scale 4 – Chief Manager
- Scale 5 – Asst. General Manager
- Scale 6 – Deputy General Manager
- Scale 7 – General Manager.
C) LIC Assistant Exam: It provides you with time-based promotions. Employees get promotions based on their years of experience and performance. Employees also get a chance for promotion via departmental exams.
4. Allowances and Other Benefits:
A) SBI Clerk Exam
Given below are the salary components of an SBI Clerk:
- Dearness Allowance (DA): Based on CPI, DA is revised quarterly
- House Rent Allowance (HRA): It depends on the place of posting of the employee and this component is usually higher for metro cities as compared to urban, semi-urban, or rural areas
- Special Allowance
- Transport Allowance
- For Metro cities like Mumbai, the monthly starting emoluments of a Clerical cadre employee is approx. Rs. 23600/- inclusive of DA (Dearness Allowance) and other allowances at the current rate.
- After selection as an SBI Clerk, a candidate will be eligible for various other perks like Pension (under the New Pension Scheme, NPS), Leave fare, Medical facilities, Provident Fund, etc.
B) IBPS Clerk Exam
- Dearness allowance: DA is 4% of basic pay and revised quarterly for every 3 months which is based on CPI (Consumer Price Index) declared by the banks.
- House Rent Allowance: HRA is 7-9% of basic pay. It differs from the cities.
Cities with a population of more than 5 lakhs
- Special allowance: 7.5%
- After one year of service, you will have an increment of Rs. 400 and a further increment of Rs. 500 increment in the 2nd year.
- The SBI Clerk's salary has been enhanced by Rs. 3,000 to 4,000/- following the settlement of the 11th bipartite settlement.
Note: Salary in Public Sector banks is revised as per the banking norms. It is to be noted that the promotion of an individual is judged by the performance of an individual.
C) LIC Assistant Exam
A LIC Assistant is entitled to be paid a Contributory Pension, LTC and Gratuity, etc. Along with this, Group personal accident insurance and Vehicle loan(2 wheeler) as per rules are also paid to him/her.
