Learn Vocabulary from 'The Hindu' Newspaper Wordlist: 7th July 2022

Vocabulary is an essential tool to ace the English section in competitive examinations. You can score better in the subject if you are able to intensify your command of Vocabulary. A regular reading habit can help you with this. With the exercise, you will come across a number of new words, whose meanings you can look up in the dictionary. This, in turn, will help you understand the context of the piece you are reading.

In conjunction with the above idea, we bring to you our series ‘Newspaper Wordlist’. This series aims to help you understand the different aspects of the commonly (and not so commonly) used words, ranging from their meaning and pronunciations to proper usage in sentences.

Important Vocabulary from The Hindu Editorial: 7th July 2022

1. Word: Vandalise (तहस नहस करना)

  • Pronunciation: van-dl-ahyz/व़ैन्डलाइज़्
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. to intentionally damage property belonging to other people
  • Synonyms: ruin, damage, sabotage
  • Antonyms: aid, mend, refine
  • Usage in a sentence: When I got back, my car had been vandalized.

2.  Word: Sagacity (विलक्षणता)

  • Pronunciation: suh-gas-i-tee 
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. the quality of having or showing understanding and the ability to make good judgments
  • Synonyms: judiciousness, intelligence, shrewdness, discernment, wisdom
  • Antonyms: foolishness, silliness, ignorance, stupidity
  • Usage in a sentence: Despite having differences of opinion, the team was saved by the sagacity of its leader.

3. Word: Bigotry (कट्टरता)

  • Pronunciationbig-uh-tree/ बिगट्री 
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: intolerance towards those who hold different opinions from oneself.
  • Synonyms: intolerance, prejudice, fanaticism, discrimination
  • Antonyms: tolerance, fairness, forbearance, impartiality
  • Usage in a Sentence:  He once called liberalism a form of bigotry, but he did not particularly mind being called a bigot himself.

4. Word: Condone (माफ़ करना)

  • Pronunciation: kən-ˈdōn/कन्डोन
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: accept (behaviour that is considered morally wrong or offensive).
  • Synonyms: forgive, overlook, pardon
  • Antonyms: forbid, prevent
  • Usage in a Sentence: a government accused of condoning racism.

5. Word: Retract (इनकार करना)

  • Pronunciation: ri-trakt/रिट्रैक्ट
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. to draw back or in
    b. to draw back within itself or oneself, fold up, or the like, or to be capable of doing this
  • Synonyms: withdraw, revoke, rescind, recant
  • Antonyms: quick visit, extend, support
  • Usage in a sentence: When questioned on TV, he retracted his allegations.

6. Word: Malicious (दुर्जन)

  • Pronunciation: muh-lish-uh s/ मलिशस
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: characterized by malice; intending or intended to do harm.
  • Synonyms: malevolent, spiteful, vicious, wicked, malignant
  • Antonyms: kind, benevolent, loving, considerate
  • Usage in a Sentence: Frank sensed her discomfort and took a certain malicious pleasure in it, enacting all the while his perfect innocence.

7. Word: Malaise (बेचैनी)

  • Pronunciation: ma-leyz/ मैलेज़
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: a general feeling of discomfort, illness, or unease whose exact cause is difficult to identify.
  • Synonyms: discomfort, uneasiness, unrest, pain
  • Antonyms: comfort, bliss, happiness, ecstasy
  • Usage in a Sentence: The country's current economic problems are symptoms of a deeper malaise.

8. Word: Blasphemy (ईश-निन्दा)

  • Pronunciation: blas-fuh-mee/ ब्लैस्फमी
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: the action or offence of speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things; profane talk.
  • Synonyms: sacrilege, profanity
  • Antonyms: safeguard, protect, aid
  • Usage in a sentence: He was found guilty of blasphemy and sentenced to three years in jail.

9.Word: Wade (कष्ट से चलना या बिताना)

  • Pronunciation: weyd/ वेड
  • Part of Speech: Verb, Noun
  • Meaning
    a. walk with effort through water or another liquid or viscous substance. (Verb)
    b. an act of wading. (Noun)
  • Synonyms: paddle, plod, toil, trudge 
  • Antonym: jump
  • Usage in a Sentence: We waded through the crowded bus station.

10. WordKick-start (झटके से बल लगाकर शुरु करना)

  • Pronunciationkik-stahrt/ किक्स्टार्ट
  • Part of Speech: Verb, Noun
  • Meaning
    a. provide an impetus to start or resume (a process) [Verb]
    b. an impetus given to start or resume a process [Noun]
  • Synonyms: activate, spur, ignite, initiate, set in motion
  • Antonyms: come to an end, stop
  • Usage in a Sentence: The government's attempt to kick-start the economy has failed.
