Learn Vocabulary from 'The Hindu' Newspaper Wordlist: 27th May 2022

Vocabulary is an essential tool to ace the English section in competitive examinations. You can score better in the subject if you are able to intensify your command of Vocabulary. A regular reading habit can help you with this. With the exercise, you will come across a number of new words, whose meanings you can look up in the dictionary. 1. Word: Grim (ख़राब)

  • Pronunciation: grim/ग्रिम
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: 
    a. very serious or gloomy.
    b. (especially of a place) unattractive or forbidding.
  • Synonyms: gloomy, bleak
  • Antonyms: cheerful, compassionate
  • Usage in a Sentence: When he lost his job, his future looked grim.

2. Word: Outrage (उपद्रव)

  • Pronunciationout-reyj/ आउट्रेज
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Verb
  • Meaning
    a. an extremely strong reaction of anger, shock, or indignation. (Noun)
    b. an action or event causing outrage. (Noun)
    c. arouse fierce anger, shock, or indignation in (someone). (Verb)
    d. flagrantly violate or infringe (a principle, law, etc.). (Verb)
  • Synonyms: fury, savagery, brutality
  • Antonyms: delight, flattery, remedy
  • Usage in a Sentence: Much of the outrage was directed at foreign nationals.

3. Word: Clamp Down (कठोर नीति)

  • Pronunciation: klamp doun/क्लैम्प्डाउन
  • Part of Speech: Phrasal Verb of Clamp
  • Meaning:

       a. suppress or prevent something in an oppressive or harsh manner.

  • Synonyms: suppress, prevent
  • Antonyms: bring up, extract
  • Use in a Sentence: The situation could worsen this year as the government continues to clamp down on credit.

4. Assault (आक्रमण करना)

  • Pronunciation: uh-sawlt/असॉल्ट
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. a violent attack (Noun)
    b. to make an assault upon; attack; assail (Verb)
  • Synonyms: attack, strike, assail, charge
  • Antonyms: defend, support, protect
  • Usage in a sentence: They launched an assault on the capital yesterday.

5. WordProliferation (प्रचार)

  • Pronunciation: pruh-lif-uh-rey-shuh n/प्रोलिफरैशन
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: a. rapid increase in the number or amount of something.
  • Synonyms: propagation, growth
  • Antonyms: abatement, decline
  • Usage in Sentence: The past one year have seen the proliferation of TV channels.

6. Word: Enforcement (प्रचलन)

  • Pronunciation: en-fawrs-muh nt/एन्फोर्स्मन्ट
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: the act of compelling observance of or compliance with a law, rule, or obligation. 
  • Synonyms:  imposition, implementation
  • Antonyms: dismissal, expiration
  • Use in a Sentence: The doctors want stricter enforcement of existing laws.

 7. Word: Lobby (अपने पक्ष में जनमत तैयार करना )

  • Pronunciation: lob-ee/लाबी
  • Part of Speech: Verb, Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. to try to persuade a politician, the government, or an official group that a particular thing should or should not happen, or that a law should be changed (Verb)
    b. the (large) room into which the main entrance door opens in a hotel or other large building (Noun)
  • Synonyms: pressure group, anteroom, corridor, push
  • Antonyms: repress, exit, pull 
  • Usage in a sentence: Council members have been lobbying colleagues on how to vote.

8. Word: Plea (निमित्त)

  • Pronunciation: plee/प्ली
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: a request made in an urgent and emotional manner.
  • Synonyms: appeal, entreaty
  • Antonyms: command, instruction
  • Use in a Sentence: The man-made no plea for relief.

9. Word: Perish (नष्ट हो जाना)

  • Pronunciation: per-ish/ पेरिश
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning
    a. die, especially in a violent or sudden way.
    b. suffer complete ruin or destruction.
    c. (of rubber, food, etc.) lose its normal qualities; rot or decay.
  • Synonyms: expire, die, pass away, depart, succumb
  • Antonyms: survive, exist, live, revive
  • Usage in a sentence: The civilization perished after 500 years.

10. WordFiercely (उग्रतापूर्वक)

  • Pronunciation: feers-ly/फीर्स्ली
  • Part of Speech: Adverb
  • Meaning: in a powerful and destructive manner.
  • Synonyms: furiously, intensely, excitedly
  • Antonyms: calmly, kindheartedly, peacefully
  • Use in a Sentence: He was fiercely proud of his family traditions.
