Vocabulary is an essential tool to ace the English section in competitive examinations. You can score better in the subject if you are able to intensify your command of Vocabulary. A regular reading habit can help you with this. With the exercise, you will come across a number of new words, whose meanings you can look up in the dictionary. 1. Word: Disparage (उपेक्षा करना)

  • Pronunciation: dih-spar-ij/डिस्पैरिज
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. to speak of or treat slightly; depreciate; belittle
    b. to bring reproach or discredit upon; lower the estimation of
  • Synonyms: denigrate, belittle, deprecate
  • Antonyms: praise, flatter, highlight
  • Usage in a sentence: Your behavior will disparage the whole family.

2. Word: Intimidate (डराना)

    d. damage or injury; detriment (Noun)
    e. someone or something that prejudices you influences you unfairly so that you form an unreasonable opinion about something (Verb)

  • Antonyms: tolerance, fairness, justice, equity
  • Usage in a sentence: Laws against racial prejudice must be strictly enforced.

4. Word: Tarnish (कलंकित करना)

  • Pronunciation: tahr-nish/टार्निश
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. to make or (especially of metal) become less bright or a different colour
    b. to make people think that someone or something is less good
    c. If something tarnishes your opinion of someone or something, you no longer believe the person or thing is as good as you had thought
  • Synonyms: sully, taint, stain
  • Antonyms: improve, purify, clean
  • Usage in a sentence: By this time a series of scandals had severely tarnished the candidate's image.

5. Word: Baffle (चक्कर में डाल देना)

  • Pronunciation: बैफल/baf-uhl
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. to confuse, bewilder, or perplex
    b. to frustrate or confound; thwart by creating confusion or bewilderment.
    c. to check or deflect the movement of (sound, light, fluids, etc.)

    b. to form or make, especially by concentrated effort
    c. to suddenly and quickly move forward

9. Word: Propagandist (मत-प्रचारक)

  • Pronunciation: prop-uh-gan-dist/प्रापगैन्डिस्ट

    a. someone who creates or spreads propaganda (Noun)
    b. relating to propaganda (= information that is spread with the intention of changing people's opinions) or to someone who creates or spreads it (Adjective)

10. Word: Catalogue (सूचीपत्र में दर्ज करना)

  • Pronunciation: kat-l-awg/कैटलॉग
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. a book with a list of all the goods that you can buy from a shop
    b. to record something, especially in a list
  • Synonyms: register, list, record
  • Antonyms: amorphous
  • Usage in a sentence: Many plants become extinct before they have even been catalogued.
