Learn Vocabulary from 'The Hindu' Newspaper Wordlist: 22nd June 2022

Vocabulary is an essential tool to ace the English section in competitive examinations. You can score better in the subject if you are able to intensify your command of Vocabulary. A regular reading habit can help you with this. With the exercise, you will come across a number of new words, whose meanings you can look up in the dictionary. This, in turn, will help you understand the context of the piece you are reading.

1. Word: Auction (नीलाम)

  • Meaning:

  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning:
    a. causing a marked change in someone or something.
  • Synonymsreframing, revolutionary, breakthrough 
  • Antonymsuneventful, ordinary, common
  • Usage in a sentence: The transformative power of technology is making our lives easier than before.

4.  Word: Underscore (बल देना)

  • Pronunciation: uhn-der-skawr/ अन्डर्स्कॉर
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning:
  • Synonyms: stress, accentuate, highlight
  • Antonyms: ignore
  • Usage in a sentence: The data accumulated by the Bureau of Labour Statistics underscore this phenomenon.

5. Word: Laudable (प्रशंसनीय)

  • Pronunciationlaw-duh-buh l/ लॉडबल
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: deserving praise and commendation.
  • Synonyms: praiseworthy, commendable, admirable
  • Antonyms: disgraceful, outrageous, undeserving
  • Usage in a Sentence: My father's work for charity is highly laudable.

6. Word: Staggered (adjective)

  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: to cause to waver or doubt
  • Synonyms: astonished, surprised, shocked.
  • Antonyms: steady, unaffected
  • Usage in Sentence: I was staggered by the unexpected phone call.

  • Pronunciation: spek-truhm/स्पेक्ट्रम
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: 
    a. (Physics)an array of entities, as light waves or particles, ordered in accordance with the magnitudes of a common physical property, as wavelength or mass: often the band of colors produced when sunlight is passed through a prism, comprising red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet
    b.   • Meaning:
    a. an official list or table showing the duties or customs imposed by a government on imports or exports.
    b. the schedule or system of duties so imposed.
    c. any duty or rate of duty in such a list or schedule.
  • Synonyms: tax, valuation, levy
  • Antonyms: subsidy
  • Usage in a Sentence: A general tariff was imposed on foreign imports.

9. Word: Leverage (लाभ उठाना)

  • Pronunciation: lev-er-ij/लीवरिज
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. power or ability to act or to influence people, events, decisions, etc.; sway
  • Synonyms: advantage, authority, supremacy
  • Antonyms: inferiority, poorness, weakness 
  • Usage in a Sentence: We'll have to use leverage to move this huge rock.

10. Word: Confine (सीमा, सीमित करना)

  • Pronunciation: kuhn-fahyn/ कन्फाइन
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning
    a. keep or restrict someone or something within certain limits of (space, scope, or time). (Verb)
    b. restrain or forbid someone from leaving (a place). (Verb)
    c. the borders or boundaries of a place, especially with regard to their restricting freedom of movement. (Noun)
  • Synonyms: limit, restrict, restrain, imprison, incarcerate
  • Antonyms: free, release, liberate, unchain
  • Usage in a Sentence: This collective endeavour to live free unfolds in the confines of the carceral landscape.
