Learn Vocabulary from 'The Hindu' Newspaper Wordlist: 21st June 2022

Vocabulary is an essential tool to ace the English section in competitive examinations. You can score better in the subject if you are able to intensify your command of Vocabulary. A regular reading habit can help you with this. With the exercise, you will come across a number of new words, whose meanings you can look up in the dictionary. This, in turn, will help you understand the context of the piece you are reading.

In conjunction with the above idea, we bring to you our series ‘Newspaper Wordlist’. This series aims to help you understand the different aspects of the commonly (and not so commonly) used words, ranging from their meaning and pronunciations to proper usage in sentences.

Important Vocabulary from The Hindu Editorial: 21st June 2022

1. Word: Coalition (सम्मिलन)

  • Pronunciation: koh-uh-lish-uh n/कोअलिशन
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: a temporary alliance for combined action, especially of political parties forming a government.
  • Synonyms: alliance, union, partnership
  • Antonyms: isolation, discord, separation
  • Usage in a Sentence: The two bodies have merged to form a coalition.

2.  Word: Resurgence (पुनरुत्थान)

  • Pronunciation: ri-sur-juh nt/ रीसर्जन्स
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: an increase or revival after a period of little activity, popularity, or occurrence.
  • Synonyms: revival, resurrection, renewal, rebirth
  • Antonyms: attenuation, disappearance, disintegration, lapse, breakdown
  • Usage in a Sentence: There has been some resurgence in economic activity recently.

3. Word: Endorse (समर्थन करना)

  • Pronunciation:en-dawrs/ एन्डॉर्स
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning
    a. declare one's public approval or support of.
    b. recommend (a product) in an advertisement.
  • Synonyms: support, approve, sanction, agree
  • Antonyms: disapprove, oppose, reject, condemn
  • Usage in a Sentence: The newspaper has endorsed the conservative candidate for mayor.

4.  Word:  Substantial (मजबूत)

  • Pronunciation: सब्स्टैन्शल/Subs-tan-cial
  • Meaning - referring to something that is greater or larger than normal
  • Synonyms - considerable, real, material, weighty,
  • Antonyms -  insubstantial, worthless
  • Usage in a sentence - Known for his substantial efforts in winning, the competitive boy rarely could find someone to play against because the opponent knew he would lose.

5. Word: Resentment (नाराजगी)

  • Pronunciation: ri-zent-muhnt/ रिज़ेन्ट्मन्ट
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. the feeling of displeasure or indignation at some act, remark, person, etc., regarded as causing injury or insult.
  • Synonyms: bitterness, animosity, pique
  • Antonyms: friendliness, affection sympathy
  • Usage in a sentence: The players were feeling a sense of resentment after it was announced that they had to train for more hours. 

6. Word: Forge (ढालना)

  • Pronunciation: fawrj/ फॉर्ज
  • Part of Speech: Verb, Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. make or shape (a metal object) by heating it in a fire or furnace and hammering it. [Verb]
    b. a furnace for melting or refining metal. [Noun]
  • Synonyms: falsify, fabricate, shape, fake
  • Antonyms: destroy, abolish, recede
  • Usage in a sentence: The programme aims to forge links between higher education and small businesses.

7. WordSpectrum (विस्तृत श्रेणी)

  • Pronunciation: spek-truhm/स्पेक्ट्रम
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: 
    a. (Physics)an array of entities, as light waves or particles, ordered in accordance with the magnitudes of a common physical property, as wavelength or mass: often the band of colors produced when sunlight is passed through a prism, comprising red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet
    b. (Physics) this band or series of colors together with extensions at the ends that are not visible to the eye, but that can be studied by means of photography, heat effects, etc., and that are produced by the dispersion of radiant energy other than ordinary light rays.Compare band spectrum, electromagnetic spectrum, mass spectrum
    c. a broad range of varied but related ideas or objects, the individual features of which tend to overlap so as to form a continuous series or sequence
  • Synonyms: range, gamut, scope
  • Antonyms: monochromatic
  • Usage in a sentence: He was held in great affection by people across the political spectrum.

8. Word: Populism (लोकलुभावनवाद)

  • Pronunciation: pop-yuh-liz-um
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: related to policies that supposedly represent the opinions of ordinary people , support for the rights and powers of ordinary people
  • Synonyms: demagogy, rabble-rousing 
  • Usage in a sentence The candidate’s ability to align himself with the prejudices of the poor made him a product of populism.

9. WordConsensus (सामंजस्य )

  • Pronunciation: kuh n-sen-suh s/कन्सेन्सस
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: a general agreement.
  • Synonyms: accord, concordance
  • Antonyms: disagreement, dissension
  • Usage in a Sentence: The two companies have reached a consensus.

10. Word: Liberal (आजाद ख्याल)

  • Pronunciation: lib-er-uhl/ लिबरल 
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: 
    a. favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs.
    b. (often initial capital letter) noting or pertaining to a political party advocating measures of progressive political reform.
  • Synonyms: generous, tolerant, charitable
  • Antonyms: conservative, frugal, greedy
  • Usage in a sentence: People having liberal outlook tend to think of the government subsidies in a different way.
