Learn Vocabulary from 'The Hindu' Newspaper Wordlist: 20th June 2022

Vocabulary is an essential tool to ace the English section in competitive examinations. You can score better in the subject if you are able to intensify your command of Vocabulary. A regular reading habit can help you with this. With the exercise, you will come across a number of new words, whose meanings you can look up in the dictionary. This, in turn, will help you understand the context of the piece you are reading.

1. Word: Derail (पटरी से उतरना)

  • Pronunciation: dee-reyl/डीरेल
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. (of a train, streetcar, etc.) to run off the rails of a track
    b. to become derailed; go astray
    c. to cause (a train, streetcar, etc.) to run off the rails of a track
    d. to cause to fail or become deflected from a purpose
    e. reduce or delay the chances for success or development of
  • Synonyms: thwart, foil, frustrate
  • Antonyms: assist, encourage, further
  • Usage in a sentence: Renewed fighting threatens to derail the peace talks.

2.  Word: Jitter (घबराना)

  • Pronunciationjit-er/जिटर
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: 

        a. feelings of extreme nervousness. [Noun]

        b. slight irregular movement, variation, or unsteadiness, especially in an electrical signal or electronic device. [Noun]

        c. act nervously. [Verb]

  • Synonyms: anxiety, tremble
  • Antonyms: soothe, calm
  • Use in a Sentence: I always get the jitters before exams.

  • Pronunciationvig-ar/विगर
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: physical strength and good health, high level of activity
  • Synonyms: strength, enthusiasm, robustness, healthiness 
  • Antonyms:  laziness, boredom, fearfulness
  • Usage in a Sentence: During her assault, the feisty woman fought back with the vigour that surprised her attacker.

4. Word: Swathe (पट्टा)

  • Pronunciation: sweyth / स्वैद
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: a broad strip or area of something.
  • Synonyms: bandage, enfold, cover
  • Antonyms: narrow strip
  • Usage in a sentence: A great swathe of the forest has been deforested.

5. Word: Reeling ( डगमगाना)

  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: 

        lose one's balance and stagger or lurch violently.

  • Pronunciationreel-ing
  • Synonyms:stagger, lurch, sway, rocexpand, rising, ascend
  • Use in a Sentence: Country's Capital Delhi is reeling under another pollution crisis.

6. Word: Peninsula (प्रायद्वीप)

  • Pronunciation: puh-nin-suh-luh/ पनिन्सूलै
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. an area of land almost completely surrounded by water except for an isthmus connecting it with the mainland.
  • Synonyms: island, foreland, landmass
  • Antonyms: inland, interior, non-coastal
  • Usage in a sentence: The peninsula was surrounded by a host of ships during the New Year celebrations.

7. Word: Premise (आधार वाक्य)

  • Pronunciationprem-is/प्रेमिस
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Verb
  • Meaning: 
    a. a previous statement or proposition from which another is inferred or follows as a conclusion. [Noun]
    b. base an argument, theory, or undertaking on. [Verb]
  • Synonyms: supposition, hypothesis, presumption
  • Antonyms: truth, fact, reality
  • Usage in a Sentence: We can infer a conclusion from the given premise.

8. Word: Persistence (दृढ़ता)

  • Pronunciation: per-sis-tuh ns/पर्सिस्टन्स
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. the continuance of an effect after its cause is removed
    b. continued existence or occurrence
    c. the fact that someone or something persists
    d. the quality of being persistent, or the act of persisting
  • Synonyms: perseverance, tenacity, determination, endurance
  • Antonyms: apathy, emotional instability
  • Usage in a sentence: Most financial analysts have been surprised by the persistence of the recession.

9. Word: Converse (विपरीत, वार्तालाप करना)

  • Pronunciation: kuhn-vurs/ कान्वर्स
  • Part of Speech: Verb, Noun
  • Meaning
    a. engage in conversation
    b. conversation
  • Synonyms: talk, opposite, reverse, contrary
  • Antonyms: equal, same, complementary, adequate, similar
  • Usage in a Sentence: They conversed quietly in the corner of the room.

10. Word: On the horizon (आसन्न)

  • Part of speech: Phrase
  • Meaning: imminent or just becoming apparent.
  • Synonyms: impending, in prospect/on the way.
  • Usage in a sentence: With some interviews lined up, a job might be on the horizon.
