Learn Vocabulary from 'The Hindu' Newspaper Wordlist: 17th June 2022

Vocabulary is an essential tool to ace the English section in competitive examinations. You can score better in the subject if you are able to intensify your command of Vocabulary. A regular reading habit can help you with this. With the exercise, you will come across a number of new words, whose meanings you can look up in the dictionary. 1. WordDemolition (गिराव)

  • Pronunciation: dem-uh-lish-uh n/डेमलिशन
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: the action or process of demolishing or being demolished.
  • Synonyms: destruction, ruin
  • Antonyms: rehabilitation, conservation
  • Use in a Sentence: The project required the total demolition of the old bridge.

2.  Word: Retribution (कठोर दण्ड)

  • Pronunciation: re-truh-byoo-shuhn/रेट्रब्यूशन
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. deserved and severe punishment
    b. requital according to merits or deserts, especially for evil.
  • Synonyms: retaliation, vengeance, revenge, requital
  • Antonyms: pardon, forgiveness, sympathy
  • Usage in a sentence: They fled because they feared retribution for the genocide.

3. Word: Fig leaf (छिपाना)

  • Pronunciation: fig leef/फिग लीफ
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:

       a. a thing intended to conceal a difficulty or embarrassment.

  • Synonyms: disguise, pretext, mask
  • Antonyms: showing, telling
  • Use in a Sentence: The man used humor as a fig leaf to conceal the fact that he was struggling with depression.

4. Word: Rehabilitation (पुनर्वास ).

  • Pronunciation:  re-habi-lae-shun/ˌरीअˌबिलिˈटेश्‌न्‌
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    the action of bringing (someone or something) back to a normal
  • Synonyms:   Regeneration, renewal, revival, betterment
  • Antonyms: Atrophy, depletion
  • Usage in a sentence: There is an alcohol and drug rehabilitation center near our house.

5. Word: Allegedly (कथित रूप से)

  • Pronunciation: uh-lej-id-lee/अलेजिड्ली
  • Part of Speech: Adverb
  • Meaning: used to convey that something is claimed to be the case or have taken place, although there is no proof.
  • Synonyms: reportedly, supposedly, reputedly, purportedly, ostensibly, apparently
  • Antonyms: accurately, certainly, actually, exactly
  • Usage in Sentence: He lost his job for allegedly being incapable.

6. Word:  Brook (बहना, बर्दाश्त करना)

  • Pronunciation: brook/ब्रुक
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Verb 
  • Meaning:
    a. a small stream (noun)
    b. to allow or accept something, esp. a difference of opinion or intention (verb)
  • Synonyms: tolerate, endure, bear, stomach
  • Antonyms: abstain, prohibit, disapprove
  • Usage in a sentence: She won’t brook any criticism of her work.

7. Word: Stringent (सख्त)

  • Pronunciationstrin-juh nt/ स्ट्रिन्जन्ट
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning:  (of regulations, requirements, or conditions) strict, precise, and exacting
  • Synonyms: harsh, rigorous, severe
  • Antonyms: tolerant, flexible, lenient
  • Usage in a Sentence: He failed to convene the stringent selection criteria.

8. Word: Purported (कथित)

  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Pronunciation: pur-port-ed
  • Meaning: appear to be or do something, especially falsely
  • Synonyms: imply, pretend
  • Antonyms: conceal, deny
  • Usage in a Sentence: The drug manufacturer knows it is against the law to purport claims about its product’s effectiveness. 

9. Word: Cognisance (परिज्ञान)

  • Pronunciation: kog-nuh-zuh ns/काग्निज़न्स
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: knowledge or awareness.
  • Synonyms: observance, realization
  • Antonyms: unconsciousness
  • Usage in a Sentence: Such understanding is beyond his cognisance.

10. Word: Convoluted (पेचीदा)

  • Pronunciationkon-vuh-loo-tid/ कान्वलूटड
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: 
    a. (especially of an argument, story, or sentence) extremely complex and difficult to follow.
    b. intricately folded, twisted, or coiled.
  • Synonyms: complex, tortuous, intricate, labyrinthine, tangled
  • Antonyms: simple, basic, uncomplicated, uncoiled
  • Usage in a sentence: She gave a convoluted explanation that left the listeners even more confused than they were before.
