Konkan coast and Coromandel Coast in India are located along the Western and Eastern Ghats, respectively. India has a total coastline of 7516.6 km, which includes the coastlines of 1197 Indian islands and 6100 km of the mainland (UTs).

It can be roughly classified into two categories based on the area and current geomorphological processes:

  1. the western coastal plains;
  2. the eastern coastal plains.

The western coast can be separated into the Kachchh and Kathiawar coast in Gujarat, Konkan coast in Maharashtra, Goan coast and in Karnataka, and Malabar coast in Kerala. It stretches from the Gujarat coast in the north to the Kerala coast in the south.

  • The western coastal plains are rather small in the centre and gradually gain wider as they move north and south.
  • There is no delta formed by the rivers that pass across this coastal plain.
  • The Malabar coast has some distinctive characteristics, including Kayals (backwaters), which are used for fishing, and land navigation, and also because of its unique appeal to tourists.
  • The renowned Nehru Trophy Vallamkali (boat race) is held each year at Punnamada Kayal in the state of Kerala.
  • From the Subarnarekha river, the eastern coast stretches along the West Bengal-Odisha border until Kanyakumari.
  • Between the Mahanadi and Krishna rivers, this plain is referred to as the Northern Circars, and between the Krishna and Cauvery rivers, as the Carnatic/Coromandel.
  • The eastern coastal plain is larger and an example of an emerging coast when compared to the western coastal plain.
  • Here, where rivers pour into the Bay of Bengal from the east, are well-developed deltas.
  • These include the Krishna, Kaveri, Godavari, and Mahanadi deltas, among others.
  • It has fewer ports and harbors because of its emerging status.
