The AFCAT 2022 exam consists of an online examination which is followed by the Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) interview. The candidates who qualify for the AFCAT written exam receive the call letter for the AFSB interview. Candidates who are recommended in the AFSB interview required to undergo a Medical examination. After this, a merit list is prepared by IAF for the AFCAT 2022 selection process and candidates will be called for the training in the Air Force Academy.
Candidates are selected through AFCAT purely on the basis of a merit-based process. Not only candidates have to show Officers like Qualities (OLQ’s) but they also have to match the medical standards of the Indian Air Force.
The AFCAT Selection Process selection board scrutinizes all the aspects of a candidate’s aptitude, psychology, personality and knowledge and only the candidate meet the standards of IAF.

AFCAT 2022 Selection Procedure
STEP 1 of AFCAT Exam
- For all entries except NDA and CDSE for all branches, candidates have to go through the AFCAT.
- Advertisements for AFCAT is released in the month of June and December.
- AFCAT is conducted by Indian Air Force (IAF) all across India.
STEP 2 of AFCAT Exam - AFSB Interview
The successful candidates of Step- I, receive a Call letter and have to report at one of the Air Force Selection Boards located at Dehradun, Varanasi, Gandhinagar and Mysuru. At the Air Force Selection Board (AFSB), candidates are tested to check their suitability and potential as an Officer in the Indian Air Force.
STAGE | DETAILS |
STAGE I TESTING | STAGE-I is a screening test. Successful candidates of STAGE-I go further for STAGE-II testing. STAGE-I disqualified candidates are routed back after the announcement of Stage I results. |
STAGE II TESTING | All STAGE-I qualified candidates are tested by the following tests for the next four to five days. Note: The fifth day is for the Computerised Pilot Selection System Testing (Flying branch).

STEP 3 of AFCAT Exam - Medical Examination
- These tests will be explained to the candidates in detail at the Selection Board.
- The recommended candidates are sent either to Air Force Central Medical Establishment (AFCME), New Delhi or Institute of Aviation Medicine, Bengaluru for the medical examination.
STEP 4 of AFCAT Exam All India Merit List
An All India Merit List is prepared on the basis of the candidate's performance in the written test and AFSB interview, subject to being medically fit.
