Np is not a transition metal. D-Block There is ten groups in it (3 to 12). These are referred to as transitional elements. D-block elements’ basic electrical configuration is (n–1)d1-10 ns0-2
Table of content
D-Block Elements
Zn, Hg, Sc, Cu, etc. are d-block elements but not transition elements.
- It is not a d-block element, neptunium (Np).
- It belongs to the periodic table’s actinoid series and is a radioactive chemical element.
- Np has an atomic mass of 93.
- The planet Neptune inspired the element’s name.
- Transition elements include zirconium (Zr), technetium (Tc), and rhenium (Re).
Physical Properties of Np
- Neptunium (237), like plutonium and uranium, is an alpha emitter, which refers to that as it breaks down, it releases a particle made of two neutrons and protons (same as a helium nucleus). After then, it changes into protactinium 233. (element 91).
- A uranium nucleus is bombarded by neutrons to create neptunium.
- Np 237, a key source of energy for space missions, is used as a target in research reactors to produce Plutonium 238.
- Neptunium 237, which is a fission product of americium 241, is also more common in nuclear waste as a combination with other fission products.
Summary:
_______ is not a transition metal. (1) Np (2) Zr (3) Tc (4) Re
The transition metal does not include Np. It belongs to the periodic table’s actinoid series and is a radioactive chemical element.
