History of IRS
The origin of the IRS starts with Sir James Wilson establishing a direct tax in the form of an Income Tax in India in the year 1860. The Central Board of Revenue Act of 1924 established the Central Board of Revenue, and it was responsible for administrating Income-Tax Act.

IRS has two branches- Income Tax and Customs and Central Excise. To be eligible for the IRS exam, candidates must meet the IRS age limit, IRS education requirements, and Nationality criteria.
IRS Age Limit
The minimum age of the candidate must be 21 years as of August 1st of the year in which the UPSC Exam is conducted.
The upper age limit to be eligible for the IRS exam is 32 years. However, age relaxation is applicable to candidates from certain categories.

IRS Exam Qualification
Candidates must be a graduate from a recognized university or have an equivalent qualification.
Candidates who are in their final year of graduation and appeared their final exam can also apply for IRS.
IRS Exam Nationality
Candidate must be either:-
(a) a citizen of India or
(b) a subject of Nepal, or
(c) a subject of Bhutan, or
(d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January 1962 to settle down permanently in India.
(e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from the United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda, Zaire, Ethiopia, Zambia, Malawi, Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
IRS Exam- Full Form, Stage-wise details
The IRS exam is conducted every year by Union Public Service Commission. IRS Exam Full form is the Indian Revenue Service Exam, and this exam is conducted in three stages namely- Prelims, Mains and Personality tests. Let’s discuss each state in detail.
IRS Prelims
The IRS exam for Prelims is the same as the UPSC Prelims exam. UPSC conducts an IRS exam that consists of two papers- GS Paper-1 and GS Paper-2 (CSAT). Both papers are objective in nature and each carries 250 marks. The CSAT paper is qualifying, and candidates need to score at least 33% to qualify. So the merit list is prepared based on the marks scored in General Studies-1 Paper only. Candidates must take a look at the UPSC Prelims Syllabus before starting their preparation.
IRS Mains Exam
It is the second stage of the IRS Exam, and those who clear the IRS Prelims can appear for this exam. There are a total of 9 papers in the IRS Mains exam, and the first two papers are English, and Compulsory Indian language and they are qualifying in nature. The other papers are 1 Essay paper, 4 General Studies Paper, and 2 papers on the Optional Subjects. The merit list is prepared based on marks secured in these 7 papers. The IRS Mains Syllabus is the same as the UPSC Mains Syllabus.

IRS Personality Test
The shortlisted candidates on the basis of IRS Mains result are invited for a personal interview round. This test usually lasts 45 minutes, and the candidates are interviewed in front of board members. Following the interview, a merit list is created. The Interview round carries a total of 275 marks. Candidates can specify the language they want to be interviewed in.
IRS Training
After completion of the selection process, shortlisted candidates have to attend al Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, for a three-month Foundation training.
After that, the IRS(IT) Officer Trainees (OTs) attend the National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT) in Nagpur, Maharashtra, for a training program for 16 months, while IRS(C&IT) OTs attend the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes, and Narcotics (NACIN) in Faridabad, Haryana.
The training educates officer trainers to provide quality taxpayer service, comprehend the Government of India's macroeconomic, taxes, and fiscal policies, detect and sanction noncompliance, to maximize income work profile.
