Internet of Things(IoT) in brief!

By Kajal Vats|Updated : October 14th, 2020

The technical definition of The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects accessed through the Internet. In other words, it is the network of physical devices or “things” embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and connectivity, enabling these objects to connect and exchange data. These objects contain embedded technology to communicate and interact with each other or with respect to the external environment. Advancements in medicine, power, gene therapies, agriculture, and smart cities are few of the categories where IoT is prevalent.

Some examples of IOT in everyday lives:

  • Smart assistants (like Amazon Alexa or Apple’s Siri)
  • Smart appliances (stoves, refrigerators, coffee machines, washers, and dryers)
  • Smart security systems, locks, and doorbells

  • Smart home hubs to control lighting, heating, and cooling of home, etc.)
  • Fitness trackers, sleep trackers, and smart scales and machines.
  • For organizations in the retail space connecting assets such as HVAC, lighting, and security systems to a digital infrastructure allows those assets to tell you when equipment is working too hard, could fail, or is operating outside of normal operating capacity. By using IoT, retailers can control their costs and put fewer dollars into unnecessary repairs.

Main components –

  • RFIDs:Uses radio waves to track the tags attached to each physical object through electronics.
  • Sensors:Small devices that are capable of detecting changes in the physical environment.
  • Nanotechnology: Devices with dimensions usually less than a hundred nanometers.

  • Big data –IoT relies heavily on sensors, especially real-time, whose usage triggers massive processing of data.
  • Low-power embedded systems –Less battery consumption and high performance
  • Cloud – Data collected through IoT devices is massive and this data has to be stored on a reliable storage server. This is where cloud computing comes into play.
  • Internet connections and smart networks like Mesh topology.

Exciting facts/upcoming/future -

  • The Internet of Things (IoT) is emerging as the third wave in the development of the Internet.
  • In the upcoming years, IoT-based technology will offer advanced levels of services and practically change the way people live daily.
  • It has the potential to connect 10X as many (28 billion)“things” to the Internet by 2022, from wristwear to cars. IoT penetration in our daily lives is on the increase, too.
  • The global market for IoTis straight on track to reach $520 billion by 2021, representing a growth of about 50 percent in each successive year since 2017.

  • If the last ten years are any indication, devices will continue to become more connected every day and these connections to IoT-enabled devices offer ease of use, cost savings and operational efficiencies, giving individual users and businesses the opportunity to focus on data that may be beneficial to them.
