Siachen glacier is part of Ladakh, which has now been converted into a Union Territory. The Siachen glacier is located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalayan mountains. The position of the Siachen glacier is from Northwest to Southeast. It technically lies in the "Third Pole," which is a heavily glaciated Himalayan region. The mountain glaciers found in this region contain a good amount of freshwater as compared to anywhere else on Earth except in the polar ice caps.

Siachen Glacier

The Siachen glacier is a piedmont glacier located in the Karakoram range. Piedmont glaciers are the ones that spread out at the foot of mountain ranges. The glacier lies between a subrange of the Karakorams called the Saltoro Ridge in the west and the main range of Karakoram to the east. This makes the Siachen glacier the second longest non-polar glacier in the world. The longest glacier is the Fedchenko Glacier in Tajikistan.
