Terrace cultivation is practised in Uttarakhand. It is practised on steep slopes so that flat surfaces are available to grow crops. It can reduce soil erosion and surface run-off. Tea is one of the crops that are grown through terrace farming. The slopes of the eastern hills have optimal conditions such as a humid climate and evenly distributed rainfall without water logging to grow tea.

Methods of Soil Conservation other than Terrace Cultivation

The other methods of soil conservation are given below:

  • Contour barriers: The barriers that are made with Stones, grass, and soil along the contour is known as contour barrier.
  • Intercropping: It refers to the growing of different crops in alternate rows and sowing at different times to protect the soil from rain wash.
  • Contour ploughing: The ploughing done parallel to the contours of a hill slope to form a natural barrier for water to flow down the slope is known as contour ploughing.
  • Rock dam: The method to slow down the flow of water by piling up the rocks is called a rock dam.
