In three phase system, the voltages are separated by 120°.

Solution

Three-phase voltages are commonly produced with an AC three-phase generator which is also called as alternator. The three phase alternator is as shown in figure below.

The three phase alternator consists of a rotating magnetic field which is called as rotor, and this rotor is surrounded by a stator. In stator, there are three separated windings (or) coils are placed physically 120° apart around the stator.

When rotor rotates, rotors magnetic field cuts the three coils on the stator and induces a magnetic field in these three coils. As the coils of the stator are displaced by 120° apart, the induced voltages of the three coils are equal in magnitude but out of phase by 120° electrically as shown in the figure below.

Here, Van=VP∠0°

Vbn=VP120°

Vcn=VP240° 

Hence, in three phase system, the voltages are separated by 120°.
