The Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is a highly competitive exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in India. ESE 2024 Exam Pattern

The UPSC ESE 2024 exam pattern is shared below. Candidates should go through with the exam pattern to get good marks in the ESE 2024 exam.

Stage 1: Objective Type

  • Paper 1- General Studies and Engineering Aptitude Paper( common to all disciplines)
    • 2 hours duration, 200 Maximum marks
  • Paper 2- Engineering discipline -specific paper
    • 3 hours duration, 300 Maximum marks

Stage 2: Conventional Type

  • Paper 1-Engineering discipline -specific paper
    • 3 hours duration, 300 Maximum marks
  • Paper 2- Engineering discipline -specific paper
    • 3 hours duration, 300 Maximum marks

Stage 3:Personality Test

  • 200 Maximum marks

The written examination is of 1100 marks and the personal interview conducted is of 200 marks making grand total of 1300 marks.

Syllabus for General Studies and Engineering Aptitude

General studies and engineering aptitude is common for all engineering disciplines. It carries a weightage of 200 marks in the ESE 2024 exam. The detailed syllabus for the General studies and engineering aptitude syllabus are shared below.

  • Current issues of National and International importance relating to Social, Economic, and Industrial Development, Environmental pollution and degradation, Basics of Project Management, Basics of Material Science and Engineering, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) based tools, and ethics and Values in the Engineering profession.

Important Topics for CivilEngineering Paper

Important topics for civil engineering subject are shared below. Candidates must be covered these topics to get good marks in the examination. These topics are used combinedly for Paper 2 in Stage 1 and separately for Stage 2.

PAPER – I

  • Building Materials: Stone, Lime, Glass, Plastics, Steel, FRP, Ceramics, Aluminum, Properties of Cement, Properties and various Tests of Concrete, and Design of Concrete Mixes.
  • Solid Mechanics: Stress, Strains, Elastic theories of failure, Bending, Shear, and Torsion.
  • Structural Analysis: Types of stresses and strains, the concept of bending and shear stresses, Trusses, beams, Unit load method, Free and Forced vibrations of single-degree and multi-degree freedom system.
  • Design of Steel Structures: Design of beams and beam column connections, and Principles of Ultimate load design.
  • Design of Concrete and Masonry structures: Design of beams, Slabs, Lintels, Foundations, Retaining walls, Tanks, and Staircases; Earthquake resistant design of structures, and Design of Masonry Structure.
  • Construction Practice, Planning, and Management: Site investigation and Management, Network analysis for different Types of works, Quality Control, Operation Cost, Land acquisition, Labour safety, and welfare.

PAPER – II

  • Fluid Mechanics, Open Channel Flow, Pipe Flow: Fluid properties; Dimensional Analysis, Boundary layer, Principles in open channel flow, Hydraulic jump, and Pipe networks.
  • Hydraulic Machines and Hydropower: Various pumps, and Hydraulic turbines.
  • Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering: Hydrological cycle, River morphology, Flood, drought, and Capacity of Reservoirs.
  • Water Resources Engineering: River basins, Irrigation systems, water demand assessment, Water logging, canal and drainage design, Energy dissipaters, Cross drainage works, River training, measurement, and analysis of rainfall.
  • Water Supply Engineering: Quality standards and testing of water and their treatment, Industrial water supply, Pollutants in water and their effects, and Estimation of water demand.
  • Waste Water Engineering: Components and layout of sewerage system, Planning design of Domestic waste-water disposal system, and Industrial wastewater.
  • Solid Waste Management: Sources classification of solid wastes, and Disposal system.
  • Geotechnical Engineering: Properties of soil, Compressibility, Shearing resistance, and Earth pressure theories.
  • Foundation Engineering: Bearing capacity, design and testing of shallow deep foundations, Slope stability analysis, and Dams.
  • Surveying: Global Positioning System, Map preparation, Remote sensing concepts, Survey Layout for bridges, road/railway alignment, and buildings.
  • Geology: Basic knowledge of Engineering geology.
  • Highways: Traffic Surveys and Controls, principles of Flexible and Rigid pavements design.
  • Tunneling: Methods of construction, drainage, lighting, and ventilation.
  • Railways Systems: Planning, designs and maintenance practices.
  • Harbours: Layouts and planning.
  • Airports: planning design
