Important topics to prepare for GATE 2022 Electronics & Communication Paper

In GATE Electronics & Communication Paper, mostly all subjects are having almost equal weightage in the exam. So it is very important for you to know the topics where the questions have been asked regularly in the previous GATE papers. Based on the analysis of previous GATE papers, very important topics with detailed analysis is listed below.

Networks

• Regularly covered topics in GATE: Questions were asked from the following topics in all the previous GATE Papers.
• Network analysis using KCL and KVL
• Network Theorems
• Transient Analysis of First-order circuits
• Resonance
• Two-port networks
• Difficult level topics in GATE: Tough questions in GATE are possible from the following topics.
• Transient and Steady-State Analysis of Second-order RLC circuits
• Phasor diagrams
• Magnetic Coupled circuits
• Other Important topics covered in GATE:
• Two-port networks
• Laplace transform

Note: All the above topics are expected in the GATE Exam. Thus, prepare well for all those mentioned topics and revise them. Solve Sadiku textbook examples and previous GATE (EC and EE) questions with understanding suffice the preparation for Networks for GATE.

Signals and Systems

• Regularly covered topics in GATE: Questions were asked from the following topics in all the previous GATE Papers.
• Basics of Signals and Systems
• LTI systems
• Fourier Transform
• Z-transform
• Laplace transform
• Application-oriented topics in GATE: The following topics can be expected to ask the questions from them at the application level.
• Convolution, DTFT, and Digital Filters.
• Other Important topics covered in GATE:
• Fourier series (Both CT and DT), and FFT

Note: Read the above topics from the Oppenheim textbook and also solve previous year GATE (EC and EE) questions.

Control Systems

• Regularly covered topics in GATE: Questions were asked from the following topics in all the previous GATE Papers.
• Signal flow graphs
• Time-domain specifications
• Routh-Hurwitz criteria
• Frequency domain specifications, Bode plots, and Compensators.
• Difficult level topics in GATE: Tough questions in GATE are possible from the following topics.
• Root-Locus, State Variable Analysis, and Nyquist plots.

Note: Most of the questions in the GATE exam from Control systems can be solved when you revise all difficult formulae and practice through the problems.

Digital Electronics

• Regularly covered topics in GATE:
• Logic gates and their CMOS implementations, Boolean algebra, Minimization of functions using K-map, Combinational Circuits, Sequential Circuits, and Counters.
• Difficult level topics in GATE:
• Counters, Data Conversion circuits.
• Other Important topics covered in GATE:
• ADCs and DACs, and Memories.

Note: Morris Mano textbook has covered all the concepts of Digital Electronics for the GATE syllabus, and also solve previous papers of GATE (EC and EE).

Electronic Devices & Circuits

• Regularly covered topics in GATE:
• Semiconductor physics, PN junction, BJT. Difficult questions come from MOSFET and CMOS topics.
• Maximum weightage topics in the previous GATE: The following topics were having the highest weightage in the GATE paper. These topics can be assumed as very important than other topics.
• Semiconductors, PN junction, and MOSFET.
• Other Important topics covered in GATE:
•  Special diodes and VLSI fabrication

Note: Solve the examples given in the Neamen textbook.

Analog Circuits

• Regularly covered topics in GATE:
• Op-Amp and Diode Circuits.
• DC biasing
• Small Signal analysis of BJT and FET.
• Maximum weightage topics in the previous GATE:
• Op-Amps, Diode circuits, BJT and FET analysis circuits.
•  Other Important topics covered in GATE:
• Feedback amplifiers, Oscillators.

Note: Microelectronics by Sedra and Smith book extensively covers all the topics and concepts necessary for GATE Exam.

Communications

• Regularly covered easy topics in GATE:
• AM, FM, random processes, and Digital Communication
• Other Important topics covered in GATE:
• Information theory and Inter-symbol interference
• Maximum weightage topics in the previous GATE:
• AM and FM, Random processes, and Digital Communications

Note: Recommended to solve the examples of Principles of communication textbook as it covers well all the topics

Electromagnetics

• Regularly covered topics in GATE:
• Electrostatics, EM waves, Transmission
• Difficult level topics in GATE:
• Antennas
• Other Important topics covered in GATE:
• Waveguides, Basics of RADAR and Optical fibres, and Antennas
• Maximum weightage topics in the previous GATE:
• Electrostatics, EM waves, Transmission line

Note:  Electromagnetics by Sadiku covers all topics. Solve the examples of the textbook and it is enough to score well in GATE.

Engineering Mathematics

• Regularly covered topics in GATE:
• Linear Algebra, Calculus, Differential equations are easy. Difficult questions come from Probability and Statistics
• Other Important topics covered in GATE:
• Complex analysis
• Maximum weightage topics in the previous GATE:
• Linear Algebra, Calculus, Differential Equations

Note: Engineering Mathematics by Grewal textbook covers all the topics and solve all the examples of the book along with previous GATE papers.

General Aptitude

• Important topics covered in GATE:
• Sentence completion and word analogies
• Numerical computation and data interpretation
