IIM Bangalore History

Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, IIM-B was established in the year 1973. Since then, IIM-B has built its reputation as one of the top B-schools of India.  IIM Bangalore is recognised as an Institute of National importance under the IIM Act of 2017. With more than 140 faculty members, 11 disciplinary areas and 10 centres of excellence, it conducts profound research on significant issues of various industries. IIM B has 140 faculty members and it admits approximately 1200 students every year across several Post Graduate programmes. Every year, all the IIMs reveal their admission criteria and parameters according to which any candidate gets admission to the IIMs. IIM Bangalore has revealed their admission criteria for the batch of 2022-24.

IIM Bangalore Admission Process for PGP Programme for the Batch of 2023-25 

Check here the detailed IIM Bangalore admission process for the PGP programme. The candidates are firstly shortlisted of the basis of their CAT scores for the PI round. Then they are required to take the WAT. For the final selection the scores of WAT, interview and pre-PI scores (with appropriate weightage) will be considered. The step-by-step procedure for the entire admission process of the PGP programme for the batch 2023-25 is given below:

IIM-B Admission Process: Stage 1

The candidates are required to clear the below-mentioned minimum overall and sectional cut-off in the CAT exam in order to get shortlisted for the next rounds. The below table displays the minimum CAT Cut-Off 2022 required for shortlisting.

*These are cut-offs used for preparing the first short-list. The scores of those called for interviews were higher.

The candidates who wish to get admission to the IIM Bangalore also need to fulfill certain other criteria. The additional screening criteria for the candidates includes the following:

  • CAT Score (55% weightage)
    • VARC (19 points)
    • DILR (21 points)
    • QA (15 points)
  • Performance in 10th Standard (15% weightage)
  • Performance in 12th Standard (15% weightage)
  • Gender Diversity (5% weightage)

*Note: IIM Bangalore has removed the weightage of Graduation Marks from the above-mentioned screening criteria. The candidates aspiring to take admission into IIM Bangalore for the batch of 2023-25 will be evaluated on the basis of above-mentioned weightage.

By this method, a Pre-PI score is determined for each of the candidates who wish to get admission to the IIM Bangalore. After this, sufficient number of candidates are called for the Stage 2 of the admission process.

IIM B Admission Process: Stage 2

In this phase of the admission process, the students who have been selected for the PI rounds are additionally required to go through Written Ability Test (WAT) – A 30 minutes essay writing test, topics related to socio-political, economic cum business affairs and topics involving creativity may be included for WAT.

The final shortlisting of the candidates is done on the basis of the following seven factors:

  • Personal Interview (PI) score (35% weightage)
  • Written Ability Test (WAT) score (10% weightage)
  • CAT score (25% weightage)

Verbal & Reading Comprehension (VARC) – 8.75 points

Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) - 10 points

Quantitative Aptitude (QA) – 6.25 points.

  • Percentage/CGPA in 10th standard (10% weightage)
  • Percentage/CGPA in 12th standard (10% weightage)
  • Weighted work experience (10% weightage)

The final selection of the candidates for IIM-B is done strictly on the basis of the above 2-phased admission/selection procedure. As far as international students are concerned, they need to appear for the GMAT in place of CAT, rest all the procedure remains mostly similar to that of the Indian Students.

IIM Bangalore Admission Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who are interested to join IIM-B must satisfy the eligibility criteria for admission mentioned below:

  • Candidates applying for admissions at IIM-B must have a Bachelor’s Degree with 50% marks (or equivalent CGPA, relaxed to 45% marks/CGPA for SC/ST category students)
  • The Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent held by the candidate must be a minimum 3-year course completed after his/her 12th standard
  • Candidates who are in their final year of graduation and waiting for results are also eligible to apply after appearing for the CAT exam.

All PGP students with an annual household income of less than INR 800,000 are eligible to apply for financial aid. The quantum and category of financial assistance awarded is decided by the authorities based on the student’s merit and eligibility. It is also agreed based on the applicant’s financial status score and financial need score.

Highlights:

  • In 2023 a total of 512 students participated and received a total of 606 offers.
  • Once again the consulting sector was the most preferred domain with 40% of the batch opting for consulting roles.
  • The Boston Consulting Group was the top recruiter with 20 offers.
  • In total 164 companies participated in the placement process at IIM Bangalore.
  • IIM Bangalore’s top recruiting companies include Accenture Strategy, Amazon, Bain and Company, Goldman Sachs, The Boston Consulting Group, and McKinsey and Company.
  • Fourteen international offers were made during IIM Bangalore Placements this year.
