The UPSC releases the IES exam pattern and the syllabus every year in the UPSC IES notification pdf. Only candidates who have completed their bachelor's degree from an AICTE/ UGC-approved colleges will be allowed to sit in the IES examination. The official notification PDF of IES (to be released on 14 September 2022) will notify a detailed description of the IES exam pattern 2023 for UPSC IES Prelims and Mains examination. What is the IES Exam Pattern 2023?

The IES exam pattern 2023 is a fixed structure based on which the exam will be conducted. Based on these rules, candidates will face the questions in the examination. Each year UPSC releases the ESE IES exam pattern on the official notification for aspirants. Therefore, checking the IES exam pattern in detail is advised to prepare effectively for each examination stage.

The UPSC IES examination has three stages, each of which carries an individual exam pattern. The three stages of the exam are:

  • Stage 1: Preliminary Exam
  • Stage 2: Main Exam
  • Stage 3: Interview Exam

IES Exam Pattern 2023 For Prelims

The Prelims phase of the IES exam carries two different objective papers in it. A total of 500 marks will be allotted to the candidates. Candidates need to clear the overall and individual cutoff of both exams in the Prelims. The complete IES exam pattern for Prelims is explained below.

IES Exam Pattern 2023 For Mains

The IES exam pattern 2023 for Mains will carry the exam guidelines. Similar to the Prelims exam, Mains also carry two different papers. Candidates who will qualify for the Prelims can sit for the Mains exam. This exam is also conducted in the offline mode for both papers. A total of 600 marks are allotted to the candidates in both examinations combined, where each paper will carry 300 marks.

IES Exam Pattern 2023 For Interview

After the candidates qualify for the Mains or second stage of the examination, they will be forwarded to the final stage. The interview stage is also known as the Personality test of the candidates. At this stage, 200 marks will be allotted to the candidates. In the interview round, there is no fixed pattern of the test. However, a few qualities based on which candidates will be tested are:

  • Mental Qualities
  • Leadership qualities
  • Various social traits
  • Suitability for the job
  • Intellectual capabilities

FAQs on IES Exam Pattern 2023

  • IES exam pattern 2023 for Mains comprises 2 papers of 300 marks each. It will be a subjective paper where candidates have to answer 5 out of 8 questions in each paper. The duration of the exam is 3 Hours.

  • IES exam pattern 2023 for Prelims comprises 2 papers with 500 marks allotted in both. The Prelims exam will be objective and will carry MCQ-based questions. Candidates will be given a total of 5 hours to complete the exam.

  • According to the ESE exam pattern, the Prelims stage will carry 250 questions for 500 marks. If attempted incorrectly, there will be a 1/3rd negative marking in the Prelims exam.   • Yes, according to the IES exam pattern there will be negative marking in the exam. However, only the Prelims exam will carry the negative marking on both papers of this stage. The Mains exam will not carry any negative marking in any of the papers of this stage. The interview stage does not carry any negative marking scheme either.

  • No, according to the officials, there is no word limit assigned to the questions. However, candidates are advised to answer precisely in the exam as the economy of the words regarding the explanation of the answer is an important factor of consideration.

  • Yes, in the final merit list, marks in the Interview round and Mains stage are considered. The Prelims stage is qualifying in nature and does not affect the final merit list. However, performance in the Mains and Interview stage directly affects the final merit list.

  • No, candidates can only write answers in English in the IES exam. No other language is considered for answering questions in the Mains ESE exam pattern. Therefore, fluency in English writing is an important factor for the ESE exam.
