In this article, we will share with you some important terms that you can use while writing an essay in the IB ACIO Tier-2 Descriptive paper. These essay terms would help you write creative essays while maintaining the flow in the writing.
Format: An ideal essay is always written in a proper format. The format of an essay is "Introduction- Body - Conclusion".

Terms to Use in the "Introduction"
Since your reader has no idea what your subject or points are about, your first sentence should explain your essay's topic. To do so, use some of the words or phrases mentioned below to help you stay on track.
- Firstly, Secondly, Thirdly
Even if it seems self-evident, delivering the suggestions in the correct order will make the point more apparent. These terms will help you present your thoughts with more consistency and structure. This is a very powerful way of simply stating the truth. You need not number each point, but this system will help you get started with an argument. - In view of/ In light of/ Considering
These phrases/keywords will help you to start your essay. You can use them in making a point based on what other scholars/experts have suggested about your analysis. They can also be used to add evidence to an opinion/argument. - According to XYZ/ XYZ stated that/ Referring to the views of XYZ
These keywords can be used while mentioning a quote/opinion or famous saying of the personalities/ leaders that can fit in the essay in accordance with the topic.
Terms to use in the Body
The body of an essay is usually the Soul of the Essay, and it forms 60-80% of the essay. This is where you go through every detail of the subject, formulate your theories, make claims, and back them up with facts and proofs. Here, all things such as characteristics, drawbacks, advantages, disadvantages, and required intervention are to be covered.
Terms to use for General Explaining
The following terms can be used for explaining the complicated concept/point in simpler language.
- To that End/ To this end/In order to/So
These essay terms are used at the beginning of the explanation for explaining the argument. - In Other words/ To put it in another way
These phrases are used to express something in a different way in order to make it more simple or to make it easier to understand. - That is to say
"That is to say" is used to give more details or to be more concise with the description
Terms to use for Adding Information to support a point and to maintain Flow
While writing an essay, maintaining the flow is very crucial. Examiner should not be puzzled or distracted by your argument. The following terms will ensure that the thoughts and points in an essay are presented in a well structured and organized manner.
- Moreover/ furthermore/ in addition/ what’s more
These phrases are ideal for extending or contributing to an argument that has already been made by the writer without disturbing the flow of the essay. These keywords are used to add details. Furthermore, “furthermore,” and “in addition” are connecting words that can be used at the beginning of a new paragraph in the essay. - Like Wise/ Similarly/ Another key fact to remember/ As well as/ An equally significant aspect of
These phrases are used to add extra information/detail or fact that agrees with the argument/opinion/point you have mentioned already. These will help you put more emphasis on your argument. - Conversely/ However/ Alternatively/ On the contrary/ On the other hand/ Whereas
The above-mentioned keywords are used to show comparison and express the contrasting or opposing point. These terms can be used in place of the word "but" to make the essay sound wiser and interesting. - By contrast/ in comparison/ That said/ Yet
These essay phrases are used to show contrast in evidence, present unsureness about a point in your study, and display contrast. Particularly, "That said" and "yet," will demonstrate your knowledge of a subject by demonstrating the conditions or limitations of your study field. - Despite this/ Provided that/ Nonetheless
These essay terms are a great way to illustrate constructive features of your subject matter regardless of the lack of fact or reasoning. This type of words increases the consistency and competence of your essay writing. - Importantly/ Significantly/ Notably/ Another key point
These essay terms should be used to introduce an important point in the essay. These keywords are used to put more emphasis on the importance of a point. This is also a good alternative to show the contrast by showing greater importance of a point/argument than the other points. - For instance/ To give an illustration of/ To exemplify/ To demonstrate/ As evidence/ To elucidate
Many a time, we are required to prove our point in the essay by giving examples. The above-mentioned terms should be used while introducing an example. You can use these terms in place of "for example". It makes your essay more creative.
Terms to use in the Conclusion
To tie up your points and arguments, you'll need concluding terms for essays. Without being repetitive, your conclusion should provide a brief summary of all the points you have mentioned in the body of the essay. The conclusion should lead the readers to the final result. One thing to keep in mind is that conclusion should be positive in tone.
- In conclusion/ To conclude/ To summarise/ In sum/ In the final analysis/On close analysis
These are essay phrases that will be used to begin the conclusion paragraph. They should be used at the start of the paragraph. They'll indicate to the reader that your article is reaching its conclusion/end. - Therefore/ This suggests that/ It can be seen that/ The consequence is
