How to Prepare for the VARC section of CAT 2022?

CAT (Common Admission Test) is a national-level entrance exam conducted annually by the IIMs on a rotational basis for the candidates who aspire to get admission into the IIMs and other top B-Schools in India. CAT is conducted in CBT mode. CAT is usually held on the last Sunday of November. CAT 2021 was held on 28th November 2021. CAT 2022 is expected will be held on 27th November 2022. CAT consists of 3 sections: Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC), Quantitative Ability (QA), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR). The duration of this exam was 3 hours till 2019 but from 2020 onwards due to COVID-19 the duration of this exam has been changed and it is of 2 hours now. It has been seen that the number of questions was reduced in the years 2020 and 2021 to 76 and 66 respectively which were earlier 100 in 2019.

Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension:

In CAT 2021 the VARC section consisted of 24 questions. 3 marks would be awarded for each correct answer, and 1 mark would be deducted for every wrong answer except the TITA-based questions. Candidates with good knowledge of Vocabulary and Grammar will score well in this section. However, the candidates also need to know about the VARC Syllabus of CAT. How to Improve Vocabulary:

  • Read newspapers/ Novels as much as possible.
  • Reading will help in improving speed while solving RCs.
  • Lookup for words in the dictionary.
  • Maintain a journal. Keep on jotting new words.
  • Explore diverse material for reading as it increases the chance of getting exposed to new words.
  • Give importance to the roots of the words.

How to Improve on Reading Comprehension:

  • Practice a lot of RC passages.
  • Remain focused while reading.
  • Build vocabulary as it helps in understanding the passage.
  • While attempting the RC look for the central theme of the passage.

Highlights CAT 2021: VARC Section

  • In all three slots, there were 4 RCs.
  • There were questions on Para Jumbles, Odd Sentence Out, and Para Summary.
  • The difficulty level of Slot-1 of the VARC section was Easy to Moderate and Slot-2 and Slot-3 was Moderate.
