In this article, we are sharing some basic yet very powerful tips which will help you to score the best in the English section of any competitive exam they are attempting.

How to Prepare English for Competitive Exams?

Reading Habit

It is critical for anyone to enhance their English, and they should make it a habit to read English articles, newspapers, stories, novels, and other materials, as nothing beats practice. The best strategy, however, is to begin reading an English newspaper every day (preferably THE HINDU, Indian Express, etc.).

Make a list of the words you don't understand and look them up in a dictionary or on Google. Within 15 days, you'll notice a difference if you use those terms in your daily chats with classmates, family members, and so on.

The following are some of the benefits of reading the newspaper:

  • Expanding your vocabulary
  • Grammatically correcting
  • Gaining a better understanding of current events

Talk to yourself in English

Alright, this may seem absurd, yet practically everyone talks to themselves in their heads. It's a proven fact that whatever you think about the most, your personality strives to reflect it solely.

For example, if someone adores or admires a particular character (Bollywood celebrity/Hollywood celebrity/Politician, etc. ), he imagines himself to be that character. Similarly, one should speak to himself in English (in his head), as this will undoubtedly help him grow and gain a better understanding of the subject.

 Learn about Grammar Rules

It is critical for great English that the English being said or written is grammatically correct. To do so, one needs obtain an excellent grammar book and read all of the English language concepts (for example - Subject-Verb Agreement, Tenses, Articles, Noun, Verb, Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction, Interjection, Pronoun, and Degrees of Comparison).

Because rote learning is never a smart idea, I recommend focusing on understanding the concepts rather than memorizing them. You might want to look at the following books, just to mention a few.

  • Grammar and Composition in English (Author: Wren & Martin)
  • English in general (Lucent Publications)
  • Easy-to-understand word power (Author: Norman Lewis)
  • Norman Lewis's Word Power Made Simple
  • Thirty Days to a Stronger Vocabulary
  • Wilfred Funk's Six Weeks

Self-Assessment on a Weekly Basis

You should conduct your self-assessment on a weekly basis so that you can go over whatever you have studied that week and, after assessing yourself, you can easily see your shortfalls, guiding you to work on your weak areas and, as a result, assisting you in gaining an overall enrichment of the language over time.

Sharpen your Listening Skills

You should listen to British English-based English podcasts and videos. Listening to English will help you improve your pronunciation, grammar, accent, and intonation when speaking or writing in English. This will be a huge help in improving your English.

In the end, we just want to conclude by saying that -

Learning is not easy, but perseverance and hard work make the journey much smoother, and learning ceases to be a chore and becomes a pleasurable pastime.

Also, you should put your whole heart into anything you do and never treat it as a job, because a half-hearted effort is worse than never attempting. So, if you follow the advice to the letter, success will undoubtedly come your way.
