How to Join Indian Navy as an Officer and Sailor?

The Indian Navy is the Indian Armed Forces’ naval branch. India’s President is the Indian Navy’s Supreme Commander. The navy is commanded by the Naval Staff Chief, a four-star admiral. The Navy’s primary objective is to protect the maritime borders of the nation and act in conjunction with other union military forces to deter or defeat any threats or aggression against India’s territory, people or maritime interests, both in war and peace.

 

Indian Navy promotes bilateral relations between nations through joint exercises, goodwill visits and humanitarian missions, including disaster relief.

There are two types of positions available in Indian Navy:

  1. Officer
  2. Sailor

Joining the Indian Navy as an Officer

An Indian Navy officer is a person in charge and position in authority. They are the leaders of the future who lead the men into the battlefield. Most of the officers are recruited by the Indian Navy at an age of 16.5 -19 but there are opportunities for graduates, postgraduates and working people which are of age 20 – 24 Years.

There are two types of commission:

  1. Permanent Commission
  2. Short Service Commission

Below are the different ways an aspirant can join in Indian Navy as an Officer

NDA Entry:

The National Defence Academy (NDA) is the biannual exam conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) for young aspirants of the age 16.5 – 19.5 years. It is generally conducted in the months of March and August. The candidate must be appearing or should have passed 12th Standard.

The candidate needs to appear for a written exam consisting of 3 subjects (English, General Knowledge, Mathematics), clear SSB interview, and medical examinations. The exam is conducted in the month of April and September. The Notification comes out in December-January and May – June.

10+2 B.Tech-Entry:

The candidates are shortlisted based on the marks obtained in 10+2 exams followed SSB interview for aspirants in the age range of 16.5 years to 19.5 years. Just like NDA, only male candidates are eligible for this type of entry. For eligibility, candidates are expected to have scored in 10+2 exams an aggregate of 70% for mathematics, physics and chemistry. The notification is released in October-November.

Combined Defence Service Examination Entry:

The Combined Defence Service Exam is a biannual exam conducted by UPSC for graduates who are interested to join the Indian Navy. The age criteria for the aspirants applying for INA (Indian Naval Academy) should be within the age of 19-22 years. The exam is conducted in the month of February and November. The Notification comes out in October and June respectively.

University Entry Scheme (UES):

A preliminary interview in conducted for the male candidates between the age of 21-24 years in college, followed by SSB Interview. Indian Navy sends an invitation and goes for campus recruitment, where it selects certain candidates based on their campus interview for SSB.

For the aspirants to be eligible for this entry, they are required to be in a final/pre-final year with 60% aggregate in all papers, with physics and mathematics at 10+2. The notification for this entry is released in the month of July.

Direct Entries

Based on the cut-off percentage decided by the Indian Navy, candidates are selected for SSB Interview, irrespective of their gender.

Aspirants are required to be in engineering final/pre-final year with 60% aggregate in all papers, with physics and mathematics in 10+2. The Branches of Engineering and age eligible for this entry are mentioned in the advertisements posted for the recruitment.

Various Entries include – Naval Armament & Inspection Cadre, Logistics, Education, Pilot Observer etc.

Joining the Indian Navy as a Sailor

Sailors are trained to do work in Indian Naval Ships and bases depending on their trade in which they have been enlisted. Recruitment advertisements for Senior Secondary Recruitment (SSR), Matric Recruitment (MR), Musician (MUS), Sports Entry and Artificial Apprentices (AA) are published annually in the Employment News and in all leading National / Regional Newspapers in Dec / Jan and Jun / Jul. Below are the different ways how one can join the Indian Navy as a Sailor.

Artificer Apprentice

This entry is specifically for male aspirants of the age bar 17-20 years. The written exam consists of 4 parts with no negative marking for English, Science, Mathematics and General Knowledge.

A minimum qualification of 10+2 is required for the candidates to be eligible for the post. Notification is released in December-January and June-July and exam are held in the month of April and October.

Senior Secondary Recruit

This entry has eligibility criteria like that of Artificer Apprentice. Notification is released in December-January and June-July and exam are held in the month of April and October. The only difference between SSR and AA is that the SSR candidates have to undergo a training of 1 year further.

Matric Recruit & Non-Metric Recruit

Matric Recruits are sailors who are selected for tasks such as Chef, Steward and Sanitary Hygienists.

Physical Fitness Test:

PFT will consist of 1.6 km of run in minutes, 20 squats (Uthak Baithak) and 10 push-ups. The selected candidates are then chosen for Medical test by the Medical Board.
