Section Wise Analysis

There is sectional cutoff and sectional timing. The sectional timings will be disclosed in the Information Handout. You can attempt any section of your choice and level of preparedness. Like other exams, a sectional cutoff is also applicable in the Grade B officer exam, which means that you will have to clear the cutoff of each section along with the overall cutoff of the exam to qualify for the next round.

General Awareness

This section contains 80 questions and it is also one of the scoring sections of the exam. To score well in this section, you have to be good at Current Affairs and Economic Knowledge. The questions in this section are expected to be of moderate difficulty.

Out of 80 questions, around 55 questions on the Economy and the rest questions are from the yearbook, Geography, Science.

We will advise you to go through the previous year RBI Grade B cut off, such that you can prepare yourself for this section.

Try to cover the following topics to excel in this section

  • Revise the Committees formed by RBI and their recommendations
  • All the schemes should be thoroughly mugged up
  • The new plans and the role of RBI should be well prepared
  • Revise Union Budget and Economic Survey
  • The Credit rating agencies and their rating are useful
  • Revise the Economic Terms and Abbreviation

How can you score maximum marks in this section?

  • Revise the Current Affairs of at least past 6-7 Months
  • Divide the topics according to your interest and study accordingly. For example: If you are interested in International Affairs than try to cover all important news related to International Affairs first than move to other topics.
  • Make the synopsis of Current Events and revise it on a regular basis. Soon you will be a master in current affairs.
  • The Golden Rule: Must practice the GA section of all the exams conducted by RBI and IBPS namely, SBI PO Main Exam 2019, IBPS RRB Officer Scale-1 2019 Exam, SBI Clerk Main Exam 2019. Many times the same questions are repeated in the banking exam.
  • Read good magazines like Pratiyogita Darpan for Current Affairs and try to solve the GK part given in it. Read Yojana and Economical and Political Weekly (EPW).
  •  Practise Mock Tests, Sample Paper and General Awareness Questions.

English Language

This section contains 30 questions and it is one of the most confusing sections of the exam. As candidates are always in a dilemma whether he/she will clear the sectional cutoff of this section or not, even after attempting a good number of questions. If you have good command over Reading Ability and Grammar then you can score 15-18 questions in this section in just 25 minutes. The level of this section is expected to be Moderate to Tough difficulty.

Ideally, you should not devote more than 20 minutes to the English Section. The sectional Cut off for the English section in 2014 was 12 for General and 10 for OBC while in 2015. While it was 7.50 for General and 6 for OBC in both 2015 and 2016 and again 7.50 for GEN in 2018. So, plan to score somewhere 14 -18 marks in this section.

How you can score maximum marks in this section?

(i) If you are weak or average in this section you need to attempt previous year questions of various Banking exams.

(ii) You should focus on Grammar Rules, Sentence Improvements, and Comprehension and practice them daily.

(iii)For scoring high in the English Language section you need to attempt Reading Comprehension questions in the exam. One RCs is expected to be asked in Exam with 8-10 Questions. So if you manage to attempt 3 to 4 questions in RC, your chances of clearing the sectional cutoff will be good. There is no any short trick for Reading Comprehension. Just one word: Practice. Practice one RC on a daily basis.

(iv) In previous year Papers, RC questions were based on Central Banks of various countries and also on China's Economic crisis. Here, it is expected that similar types of questions can be asked in RBI Exam this year. So, try to read at least one Editorial of Newspaper in a day.

(v) Try to Practice 4-5 sets of following topics on a regular basis before the exam: Fill in the Blanks (Double Spacing), Sentence Correction and Sentence Improvement.

(vi) For improving your grammar part you can read Wren & Martin and S.P. Bakshi (Arihant)

Reasoning Ability

This section contains 60 questions and it is one of the most scoring sections in the exam. If you have good command over this section, you can score 30 – 32 questions in just 30 minutes. All you need to do is attempt the questions with good accuracy. The level of this section is expected to be of moderate difficulty

The reasoning section tests your analytical and logical reasoning skills i.e. your ability to interpret data and information given in the form of puzzles, brain teasers or clues and sort it to arrive at a meaningful outcome. It does not generally test conceptual or theoretical knowledge (apart from one or two areas) but requires a lot of practice of different question types.

The sectional cut off for reasoning in 2014 was 24 for General and 21 for OBC while in 2015 and 2016 it was 15 for General category and 12 for OBC category and 15 for GEN in 2018. Ideally you should not give more than 45 minutes in this section.

There is only one rule to score good marks in Logical Reasoning is Practise. The more you Practise the less you’ll waste your time in Exam and the bright will be the chances to score good marks.

Priority Areas of Logical Reasoning

The following topics are important because usually, at least 4 questions come from each of these.

  • Blood relations. (generally a “case/paragraph” followed by 5 questions)
  • Sitting Arrangement (generally a “case/paragraph” followed by 5 questions)
  • Coding –decoding
  • Input-output
  • Inequality (x>y and y<z …)
  • Data sufficiency
  • Number series- find the next number
  • Assumption and inferences
  • Syllogism (All cats are dogs)

Practise Material for Logical Reasoning

R.S Agarwal’s book on Verbal Reasoning

MK Pandey Analytical Reasoning (BSC publication)

Golden Rule: You must practice Previous Papers question papers of banking Exams namely IBPS, SBI and RBI exams.

Quantitative Aptitude

This section contains 30 questions and generally, students find it as one of the most difficult sections in the Grade B exam. As far as the quantitative aptitude section is concerned, speed matters a lot but don’t forget that it should be with 100% accuracy that will enhance your marks and save time. If you are weak or average in Quant section than it is always preferable to devote maximum time to the quant section so that you can attempt maximum questions and manage to clear the sectional cutoff. Try to devote 20 – 25 minutes in this section and attempt 14-16 questions with accuracy.

The sectional cut off for 2014 was 12 for General and 10 for OBC while in 2015 and 2016, it was 7.50  for General and 6.00 for OBC and 7.5 and 6 for GEN and OBC in 2018 respectively. Ideally, you should not devote more than 30 minutes to this section.

This section is more oriented towards data interpretation rather than conventional profit-loss type stuff. Go through the old papers of banking exams and prepare topics accordingly.

Ignore trigonometry, geometry (other than area volume perimeter), coordinate geometry and logarithms area.

Priority areas in Quantitative aptitude (QA)

  • Operation on brackets
  • Linear equations
  • Average + allegation
  • Ratios
  • Profit, Loss, %, SI and CI: All can be solved if you have a clear concept of % calculation.
  • Arithmetic and Geography progression.
  • TSDW (Time speed distance and Work): all can be solved using the “STD” table
  • Permutation, Combination, Probability

Data Interpretation (DI)

In this QA (maths) portion, they also asked Data interpretation (DI) questions worth 15 marks. There is hardly any theory in DI, all you’ve to do is –practice. Speed (quick calculation) is extremely important here, otherwise, you might end up wasting 20+ minutes in doing barely 5 sums of DI.

Basically DI requires speed in Addition and % calculation and a lot of practice from old Bank/IBPS papers.
