How Many Times National Emergency has been Declared?

The national emergency has been declared three times in India. For the first time, the national emergency was declared during the Indo-China war between 26 October 1962 to 10 January 1968. At this time, India declared the security after being threatened by external aggression (The country remained in the state of emergency for the longest period).

List of National Emergencies in India

India has declared a national emergency 3 times since independence. These were-

  • 1962 to 1968- India declared a national emergency for the first time during the Indo-China war. During the war, “the security of India” was declared as being “threatened by external aggression”. 
  • 1971- At the time of war with Pakistan, Dr. V.V. Giri, who was the president of India declared a national emergency. 
  • 1975 to 1977- The national emergency was declared for the third time by Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed. The emergency was declared on the basis of ‘internal disturbance’ that resulted because of the controversial circumstances. These circumstances were the result of political instability.
