How many IAS Officers are Selected Every Year?

Every year, 180 IAS officers are appointed to the administrative services through the UPSC examination. With lakhs of applications, only 180 candidates make it to the final merit list. Baswan Committee was constituted by the Government in the last decade with Shri BS Baswan as the Chairman of this Committee. Based on the recommendations of this Committee, it was identified that there is a shortage of 569 officers presently which can be fulfilled by selecting 180 officers every year.

Based on the suggestions of the Baswan Committee, it was suggested that there is a shortage of 569 IAS officers in the present system, which can be rectified by appointing 180 IAS Officers every year to the departments. Along with this, it was also suggested that the number of vacancies should not be more than 180 as it might impact the quality of the training of Officers in the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA).
