During the Training Phase
Training is conducted at INS Chilka. It is in mid of Jatia Hill and Chilika lake in the heart of Orissa. Training is divided into three parts, i.e. basic training, ship training & professional training.
Candidates selected as AA have to undergo Basic Training of 9 weeks at INS Chilka followed by Professional training in the allotted trade at various Naval Training Establishments. Artificer Apprentices also take part in various professional courses as per requirement.
Similarly, SSR candidates have to undergo basic Training of 22 weeks at INS Chilka followed by Professional training in the allotted trade in various Naval Training Establishments.
Now the question that arises is, what sort of training activities are done during this phase?
Every trainee is trained in swimming, parade drill, boat pulling, knowledge on the life in sea & ships, basics of Indian Navy, taking tours and expeditions on Chilka mouth sailing, and other extracurricular activities. The day starts with PT sessions followed by breakfast, then Parade drill & it is followed by lectures on various topics and subjects pertaining to Naval life.
Life of Sailor in the Ship/Submarine
All the training & skills you develop are put to test here. Work is divided between different teams that do different kinds of jobs. AA Sailors majorly work on steam-powered machinery, diesel and gas turbines, guided missiles and other automatically controlled weapons, sensors avionic equipment, computers, and highly advanced radio and electrical power systems. SSR Sailors are expected to do operations of various equipment such as radars, sonars, or communications or firing of weapons such as missiles, guns, or rockets.
Most of the ships have proper Gym setups, swimming pool. So, it is not like "just work no play". You will also get a lot of opportunities like visiting foreign countries. Learn various skills like Multitasking, computer knowledge and knowledge about different electronic equipments, devices and a lot more.

Leave & Travel Facilities
A sailor is provided 60 days annual leave and 30 days casual leave. 30 leaves can be accumulated & encashed at the time of retirement.
Sailors along with their family get free rail travel once a year on leave. Concessions are also provided in Rail/Air transport on other occasions.
Health & Medical Facilities
World-class medical care is provided to each and every sailor, as well as their families. This full comprehensive coverage is available at all Military Hospitals and Military Dental facilities.
Chance to See The World
This is truly the best perk, living in the calmness of the sea. The ships and submarines of the Indian Navy often visit a number of foreign ports. The men who serve on these platforms get to visit the numerous foreign ports that these ships and submarines visit.
Sailors are entitled to free accommodation. Accommodations are provided in outstanding living areas and conditions for sailors. Most of the residential areas have markets, ATMs, playgrounds, swimming pools, gymnasium, etc. Whether living in a barracks, an apartment, or a house, you’ll have access to all these amenities.
All sailors are entitled to free ration. Sailors can also seek money in lieu of ration while staying with their families.
Naval Housing Scheme
The Navy has special housing schemes in almost in major cities. Sailors have an opportunity to acquire a modern, excellent apartment of their own in planned surroundings at a station of their choice for post-retirement settlement.
