By BYJU'S Exam Prep

Updated on: September 25th, 2023

IIT Bombay Through the GATE Exam: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay offers Master of Technology programmes in various disciplines. The programme aims to train the students in deeper theoretical knowledge, which will enable them to tackle complex practical problems of design and development in industrial fields and pursue further academic achievements through research. So the question which arises in every student’s mind is ‘How can I get into IIT Bombay through the GATE Exam?’. To solve this problem, we have made it easy for students and evaluated eligibility for PG courses in IIT Bombay, the Cutoff of M.Tech courses, the requirement for PG admission at IIT Bombay etc., in the article shared below in depth.

IIT-Bombay offers full time programme of 2-year and a part time programme of 3-year duration. Full time programme includes  Teaching Assistantship (TA), Teaching Assistantship through Project (TAP), Fellowship Award (FA), and Sponsored (SW). The part-time programme includes Sponsored  (SW), Institute Research Assistantship (RA), Research Assistantship through Project (RAP), Project Staff (PS) and Institute Staff (IS). So these are the major programs in which students can get admission to IIT Bombay through the GATE exam.

Eligibility Criteria for M.Tech/M.Tech+Ph.D. (dual degree) Programmes in IIT Bombay

Candidate having an IIT B.Tech. Degree and having a CGPA/CPI score of 8.00 (on a 10 scale) and above are exempted from the requirement of GATE qualification. They will be admitted to M.Tech.Programme under TA/RA positions through written test and interview. But other, all Indian candidates have to give a GATE and attend COAP counselling to get into IIT Bombay through the GATE exam. Other category wise requirements are shared below –

Requirement of First Class/60%  for PG admission  at IIT Bombay

For General category students and for students where no concession in academic performance is called for, the First Class/60% in the qualifying degree examination as the eligibility requires meeting ANY ONE of the following criteria:

  • Minimum of 60 per cent marks in the final academic year of the programme
  • Minimum of 60 per cent marks in aggregate or as specified by the university (any one of  them)
  • A first-class as specified by the university
  • Minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) or Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.0 on a scale of 10, with corresponding proportional requirements when the scales are other than 10 (for example, 4.8 on a scale of 8)

For students from the SC/ST category, the corresponding criteria are

  • Minimum of 55 per cent marks in the final academic year of the programme
  • Minimum of 55 per cent marks in aggregate or as specified by the university (any one of them)
  • A First-class as specified by the university
  • Minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) or Cumulative Performance  Index (CPI) of 5.5 on a scale of 10; with corresponding proportional requirements

For all Academic Units (Departments, Centres,  Schools, Interdisciplinary Groups, CrossDepartmental Programmes)

  • First   class  or  60%   (55%   marks for SC/ST)  marks  in  B.E./ B.Tech./ B.Sc. (Engineering)/ M.Sc./ M.C.A./ MBBS/ M.Pharm./ B.Pharm.(4 yr.   Degree)/BDS(4yr.Degree) or
  • Associate Membership Examinations conducted by recognised professional bodies (like Institution of Engineers. Institute of Chemical Engineers., Aeronautical Society of India, Institute of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineers, Indian Institute of Metals, etc.) and recognised as equivalent to B.E. / B.Tech. Degree.

 M.Tech Programmes Disciplines and Specialization

Merely fulfilling the minimum cutoff mentioned below does not mean that a candidate with a GATE score above the cutoff is called for a written test /interview. Each department has a separate set of procedures to allot seats in a particular discipline finally. Hence M.Tech programmes and these disciplines and specialisations are shared below for every candidate in IIT Bombay through the GATE exam-
