Where is Hooke’s Law Applicable?

By BYJU'S Exam Prep

Hooke’s Law is applicable within the elastic range of material for stress below the yield strength. For some materials like aluminum, Hooke’s law is applicable within a portion of the elastic range.

Answer: Hooke’s Law is applicable within the elastic range.

Hooke’s law states that stress and strain take different forms in different situations such as the stress and strain are proportional to each other for small deformations. This law was named after British physicist Robert Hooke in the 17th century. This law defines only a first-order linear approximation to the real response of springs and other elastic bodies to applied forces. As long as the forces and deformations are small, Hooke’s law is an accurate approximation for most solid bodies.

Summary:

Where is Hooke’s Law Applicable?

Hooke’s Law is applicable within the elastic range of material. It is an empirical law that is valid for most of the materials. According to this law, stress is directly proportional to the strain which means stress = k x strain where k is a proportionality constant and it is called the modulus of elasticity.
