Here is some information about the four countries. Based on this information, how would you classify each of these countries? Write ‘democratic’, ‘undemocratic’, or ‘not sure’ against each of these.

(a) Country A: People who do not accept the country’s official religion do not have a right to vote.

(b) Country B: The same party has been winning elections for the last twenty years.

(c) Country C: The ruling party has lost in the last three elections.

(d) Country D: There is no independent election commission.

Solution:

(A) This policy is undemocratic since it restricts the freedom to practice one's religion, which is a fundamental human right.

(b) Uncertain because the administration might be as well-liked as the BJP administration in Gujarat.

(c) Democratic because it demonstrates that the parties in power do not practice autocracy.

(d) Undemocratic since all democracies require independent election commissions.

Democracy

  • A democracy is a form of government in which the rulers are chosen by the people.
  • People chosen by the people must have the final say in all decisions in a democracy.
  • Democracy must be built on the premise that elections are free and fair and that incumbents have a decent chance of losing.
  • In a democracy, every adult citizen must be entitled to one vote, and each vote must have a single value.
  • A democratic government must operate within the constraints of constitutional law and civil rights.

Undemocratic

It goes against democratic principles to deny minorities of a certain religion or race equal voting rights. Each voter's vote has the same weight in a democracy since all citizens are treated equally. Democracy faces serious challenges from unfair elections and the use of unethical practices. In Mexico, the PRI used unethical tactics to win elections after elections and rule from 1929 to 2000.
