15th August or the Indian Independence Day marks the date when our country was finally freed from the British rule in 1947 after almost 90 years of suffering, mutiny and British atrocities. The day is celebrated countrywide to pay homage to all those who laid down their lives for the freedom struggle of India. 15th August 2018 marks 72 years of India's Independence. 

About the 72nd Independence Day:

  • India's 1st all-women SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team will be a part of the security operation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he addresses the nation this Independence Day from the Red Fort. 
  • Prime Minister's Independence Day speech will be live-streamed on Youtube and Google. 
  • The Prime Minister is expected to announce new schemes for almost 32 crore beneficiaries of 'Jan Dhan Khata' holders. 
  • Pilot projects of the Ayushman Bharat Scheme are expected to be announced by the Prime Minister during his speech this Independence Day. 
  • Ministry of Railways will release the new all India Railway timetable, known as 'Trains At A Glance', with effect from 15th August 2018. 
  • Ministry of Information & Broadcasting's Film Division will hold a film festival with the theme, 'Freedom Struggle and Freedom Fighters' on 15th August 2018. 
  • Uttar Pradesh state government has pledged to ban plastic & its products completely with effect from 15th August this year. 
  • Telangana government will launch 'Kanti Velugu' scheme this Independence Day for free eye screening tests, to perform surgeries and to distribute free spectacles in all the districts.
