The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or GATE is a computer-based admission exam held once a year to enter engineering programs at top Indian Institutes of Technology such as IITs and other NITs. It is also a gateway to numerous PSUs in India. Whereas Graduate Record Examinations, or GRE, is one of the most comprehensive inspection examinations globally, it is accepted worldwide by several universities/colleges for graduate entrance. In addition, thousands of graduate programs take GRE scores worldwide.

Candidates who want to study at renowned engineering colleges and national technological institutes in India and abroad must take the GRE and GATE exams. GATE has been considered a little more complicated with the GRE vs GATE hardship levels. The GATE and GRE syllabus are not similar, but the verbal section of the GRE demands a lot of practice, whereas GATE is very easy and does not contain any marks.

Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or GATE

Overview 

Students can take this exam to apply for Masters or PhD programs in the United States and other countries.

Students who want to pursue an M Tech program at an Indian institution can take this exam.

Type of test

It’s a Computer Adaptive Test in which the complexity of the questions varies depending on the section.

This is not a Computer Based online Test with centres located in India.

Sections

Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning are the three sections.

It consists of General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics, and Concerned engineering branch syllabus.

Frequency of the exam

It is held several times a year, allowing students to take it whenever they are ready.

GATE is only held once a year. A large number of students apply. The scorecard is valid for three academic years.

Eligibility Details

There are no fixed eligibility criteria for taking GRE.

The student must have a bachelor’s degree. 

GRE vs GATE Syllabus and Pattern

GRE Syllabus and Pattern

The test pattern for the computer-delivered GRE and paper-delivered GRE is different. Computer-delivered GRE has one section with two separately timed tasks in Analytical writing and two sections of Verbal and Quant Reasoning with 20 questions per section. The total time allowed for the GRE Computer-delivered test is 3 hours 45 mins.

The paper-delivered GRE has two sections Quantitative, Analytical Writing and Verbal Reasoning. Quantitative and Verbal reasoning has 25 questions per section, and the analytical writing section has one task each, whereas the time for GRE Paper-delivered test is 3 hours 30 minutes.

There are no criteria for taking the GRE, such as age or educational background.

Candidates who are pursuing/obtained their qualifying degree must have higher years or completed their Bachelor’s degree (duration – at least 3 years) in Engineering / Technology / Science / Arts / Commerce or are currently in the 3rd year in Engineering / Technology / Science / Arts / Commerce.
