How will the NDA prepare itself for this Historic Decision

Women are currently recruited as short-service commission officers in the armed forces. The Supreme Court ruled on March 17, 2020, that women officers should have the same choice as males to convert their short-service commission to a permanent commission. The reason behind women induction through the NDA exam is:

  • The Supreme Court approached the situation from a standpoint of equality. When women arrive at the NDA, changes will need to be made to the physical infrastructure.

  • The number of squadrons of trainees has already been increased due to improved induction levels,” says Vice-Admiral Suresh Bangara (retired), a former commandant of the NDA.
  • On August 20, the three military chiefs paid a visit to the NDA to assess the situation and prepare the academy for the entrance of female students.
  • Even in the west, where women leaders in the navy have been granted command of battleships, new ships are being built with women-specific amenities in mind. It's possible that some changes will be required. “However, since women have gone to space and conquered Mount Everest, these modifications can easily be done to help them,” said retired Commander Prasanna Edayilliam (the first woman officer from the Indian Navy to challenge the denial of permanent commission to women officers in court in 2010).

Importance of women induction through NDA

It is unclear how many women will be accepted into the NDA following the written test and other formalities, which will take place in November. “Most importantly, we do not want any kind of entry reservation. We want the same education and recognition as men. “There can be no refusal of higher instructions for women then,” she also added.

A look at the numerous alternatives for admittance into the defence services through the NDA is necessary to understand what getting entry into the defence services through the NDA entails. The National Defence Agency (NDA) hires people shortly after they graduate from high school. Another way to go into the military is to take the Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam, which is only open to graduates. Both channels have permanent commissions.

There is also a permanent commission for individuals who have completed their post-graduate studies, which is mainly for engineers, electronics and mechanical engineers (EMEs), judges and advocate generals (JAGs), signals, and army educational corps (AECs), among others. The OTA (Officer Training Academy) in Chennai and Gaya selects both men and women for short service commissions. For the time being, this is the only way for women to get in.

While recruits & trainees from all the academies are on paper equal after graduation, the NDA in Pune is considered the elite institution among them. Currently, NDA recruits typically fill the top ranks in the army, navy, and air force. The reason is straightforward. NDA recruits have an edge because they are between the ages of 16.5 and 19.5. When it comes to the military, since retirement age is linked to the rank held, the youngest in a batch have a distinct advantage.
