GATE 2023 Marking Scheme: Know all About the GATE Negative Marking

The GATE exam carries 65 questions and only MCQ-based questions carry a negative marking scheme. There are three different types of questions that are asked in the GATE exam. Not all types of questions carry negative marks when attempted wrong.  

There are 29 disciplines in the GATE exam and all the disciplines carry the same marking scheme. In this article, we will learn all about the GATE negative marking, the types of questions that carry negative marks, and the number of such questions asked in the exam.

GATE 2023 Exam Pattern

The GATE 2023 Exam Pattern is given below:



Exam Duration

3 hours (180 minutes)


  • General Aptitude (GA)
  • Computer Science Engineering

Number of Questions

  • 65 questions
  • General Aptitude: 10 Questions
  • Core Subjects: 55 Questions

Questions Type

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)
  • Multiple Select Questions (MSQ)
  • Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions

Marking Scheme

  • For MCQs carrying 1 mark: 1/3 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.
  • For MCQs carrying 2 marks:  2/3 mark will be deducted for every incorrect response.
  • No negative marking for Multiple Select Question (MSQ) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions.

GATE 2023 Marking Scheme

The GATE 2023 marking scheme is made public by IIT Kharagpur for students to go through it. Negative marking will be there on the GATE question paper. Students attempting wrong answers will be allotted negative marks depending upon the type of question(MCQ) and the weightage of the question. 

Let us see the GATE 2023 marking scheme:

  1. All the 65 questions will be either of the three mentioned types and carry 1 or 2 marks: MCQ(Multiple Choice Questions), MSQ(Multiple Select Questions), and NAT(Numerical Answer Type).
  2. Only MCQ questions will carry negative marks if attempted wrong.
  3. ⅓ rd of the weightage of the question will be deducted for the wrong attempt. i.e. ⅔ marks will be deducted for the question carrying 2 marks and ⅓ for the questions carrying 1 mark.
  4. No negative marks will be marked for not attempting any MCQ-based question.
  5. MSQ and NAT questions will not carry any negative marks if attempted wrong.

GATE Total Marks

The GATE exam carries a total of 100 marks. There will be 65 questions in the GATE exam. GATE total marks will be divided among these 65 questions where 10 questions of General Aptitude will carry 15 marks. The remaining 85 marks will be covered in the remaining 55 questions based on the subject. If the subject carries Engineering Mathematics then the topic will carry 13 marks. 

GATE score can further be calculated depending upon the rank of the candidate. GATE score will be required to get admission to the IITs or NITs. Students are suggested to complete the GATE syllabus before the exam. Revision of all the topics in the GATE exam syllabus is really important for attaining a good rank.

  • Yes, for the MCQ questions, there is a negative marking. Negative marks will be awarded only on attempting the wrong answer. No negative marks will be allotted if left unanswered.

  • Yes, GATE 2022 has a negative marking scheme. Negative marking will be given for wrongly attempted MCQ questions. ⅓ rd of the weightage of the question will be deducted.

  • To avoid negative marks in the GATE exam, students are advised to only attempt the MCQ-based questions when completely sure. It is important to be sure while answering the MCQ questions.

  • The number of NAT questions that are to be asked in the GATE exam is not fixed. There can be 25+ NAT questions in the GATE exam.
