By Himanshu Bajpai|Updated : February 4th, 2022

GATE 2023 is scheduled by IIT Kanpur on February 4, 5, 11 & 12 in two sessions in 201 centres across the country. GATE 2023 will be conducted for 29 papers with the addition of two new subjects, Humanities and Social Science (XH) and Environmental Engineering (ES). The Admit card of GATE was released on 9th January 2022. Students who are going to appear in the exam can check their GATE results on 16th March 2023 and download their GATE scorecards.

About 10 lakh students attempt GATE every year, making it one of the largest exams for PG courses. A bulk of these applicants belong to five disciplines which are the most favoured on account of being core disciplines as well as in demand for PSU recruitment. The five Disciplines, which include Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Civil Engineering, are generally held in multiple sessions on account of a large number of applicants. A good plan is a start and a requirement for success. However, the last days lead to an important one as they are loaded with stress and a general shortage of time with much to do. On such occasions, tips to make the most of the time are essential and helpful.

What to Do Just Before the Exam Day?

Amid the intense preparation, many candidates forget important details, which could cause nervousness on an otherwise good day. Some last-minute tips have been given for the day just before the exam such that you don't face any problems.

  • You must download the GATE admit card in time, i.e., before the exam, take a colour print-out and keep a saved copy in your google drive. It is needed not only for M.Tech admissions but also for PSU recruitment via GATE. As the GATE scores are useful for three years, you could recover them if you decide to follow the same in a year or so. Similarly, for PSU recruitment, you can apply for recruitment based on your GATE scores in the forthcoming years.
  • Check out the exam centre the day before. This will give you a reasonable estimate of the travel distance to minimize the chances of getting lost on exam day.
  • Keep your admit card and original Photo Id- the one you cited in your GATE application form as these two are compulsory to be allowed into the exam hall.
  • DON'T carry calculators or any electronic devices. You will not be permitted to take them inside.
  • Mobile phones are not permitted inside. Better not take them as there may not be a safe place to keep them.
  • You are needed to report one hour before the exam. There would be a biometric verification, and if you hurry at the last minute, you may lose precious time, which is crucial for the exam.
  • Once you reach the examination hall, check the seating arrangements to comprehend where you may be seated.
  • Remember you will be permitted inside just 35 minutes before the exam starts and will be permitted to leave after the exam is concluded and not before. If you arrive after 09:30 am in the forenoon session after the 2:30 pm session, you will not be permitted inside the exam hall.

  • All candidates must write their name and registration number on the scribble pad before using it.

GATE 2023 Exam Day Guidelines

  • It is always recommendable to deliver a quick reading of the question paper so you can gauge how to crack it. Use the "View All Questions Button" for brief reading. This will allow you to select and plan the sequence of the sections you require to attempt.
  • Begin the exam by clicking on the section you wish to attempt first. Toppers mostly suggest starting with the General Aptitude and Engineering Maths subject section.
  • Most students find the 1-mark questions easier to answer than the 2-mark questions, which need analysis and speculation. If this bears for you, start with the 1 mark first.
  • Answer those questions that you are confident about to make a score. This will build your confidence before you move to the difficult ones.
  • An essential tip is to remember to save each answer before moving to the next one.
  • Another tip is to note the question numbers you know but needs time on the scribble pad. This will help you get quickly to them when you are prepared to answer them.
  • Answer all the questions you are confident about. Don't waste time on questions that you are not sure about.
  • After answering the questions, move to the ones you kept for later and start answering them.
  • Remember that numerical questions demand precision, so keep that in mind and calculate carefully.
  • Don't waste a lot of time on one problem. Time is at the core, so attempt wisely and well.
  • Since there is negative marking, avoid responding to questions to which you don't know the answers, so you don't lose marks on a chance.
  • Strategies and answer in a way that you have a bit of time to check your answers towards the end of the exam.

While you must prepare well for the exam in terms of syllabus and subject topics, the GATE exam day strategy and last-minute tips are paramount to give that edge to all the preparation. We hope that the GATE last-minute tips and exam day guidelines will help you plan your exam day and allow you to taste success.
